December 2024

December 2024: And that’s a wrap

I think we can all agree that 2024 can fuck right off can’t it.

I don’t even fancy looking in the rear view mirror, which is why it’s taken so long to get around to this post. That, and the epic new year hangover of hangovers. Two bloody days it lasted; getting old sucks.

If, unlike me, you’d like to reflect on my year, you can read January’s post here, February’s here, March’s here, April’s here, May’s here, June’s here, July’s here, August’s here, September’s here, October’s here and November’s here.

December is of course the month of festivities, of glitter, of gluttony and overindulgence and of course, of spending far too much fucking money. But what else did I get up to? Well, not a lot really, but here goes:

Whinge Whinge Wine turned NINE years old

I have been doing this nonsense now since December 2015 and if you don’t believe me, here was my first ever post. It wasn’t very exciting, admittedly. I also wrote this one, which was about my BABY (who is now NINE) being a shit sleeper.

I wish I could say he was better now but at least he can get his own milk and wipe his own bum.

I had a few excellent festive nights out

Well, you have to, don’t you? It’s mandatory almost. I even had a work Christmas Do this year, something I’ve not experienced since I started the blog – nine years ago as it happens… Can report I did nothing inappropriate. That I remember.

My primarily wine and cheese diet means that I’ve started 2025 quite a bit heavier and poorer than I meant to, but never mind eh. At least I got a chance to wear my sparkly clothes.

NB I was in Whamhalla by the third of December. Ridiculous.

I went to see Abba Voyage

It was really good fun, but you can’t take photos when you’re in because you’ll get kicked out of the purpose-built Abba Arena, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

Saying that, it seems to me an almost insane amount of money to spend on what is essentially a very big, very high definition, very clever, telly show.

Quite stunning effects, very Uncanny Valley in bits.. I don’t really know what else to say without giving too much away.

My friend happened to have a spare ticket due to the flu striking down her original chaperone (which absolutely sucks, I’m sure they’d been really looking forward to it) so I was more than happy to stand in – but oh my goodness, I would not have been able to afford it. You can buy tickets here, or just gawp at how much they are, if you prefer.

I upset some Americans

Who knew that ‘Don’t be a selfish dick’ was so controversial?

They really don’t ‘get it’ do they. Poor bastards.

Earned me over $500 in sweet sweet Facebook bonus though. #WorthIt

Oh, and it was Christmas…

It was alright. I didn’t have the kids this year (not until the evening, anyway) which is always odd, but I made the most of it.

Highlights: A family trip to the Panto, catching up with various friends, a very late night out in Worthing (the likes of which I’ve not experienced in 20 years), and of course going to see the Muppet Christmas Carol at the cinema, which was pretty awesome.

I went to see the Muppet Christmas Carol at the cinema, which was pretty awesome.

On Christmas day itself I woke up at a glorious 9.30am which is about four hours later than most parents I know. I went to my sister’s for lunch; she does an excellent roast and has very lovely in-laws, and also a five year old who is ridiculous in the way that all five year olds are ridiculous, but aren’t they ever so brilliant at Christmas? Peak festive age right there. So that was very nice.

Had a couple of hours drive back to the ‘Ding to collect the kids in the evening, cracked open the Bucks Fizz, opened presents, and we have basically been really lazy ever since.

…And in fact, New Year

As alluded to previously, I went Out Out – with my wonderful friend Helen and her boyfriend.

We went for dinner and to a comedy night, and then because it ended quite a bit before midnight, ended up dancing in a so-awful-it’s-kind-of-fun club waiting to see in the new year…

I’m afraid I can’t tell you what happened after midnight however, as that’s strictly for the January edition.

My tweets of the month

Well now, this is awkward as I deactivated the account. Never mind. Shall we head over to BlueSky instead?

Very sad that we only have a few short days before cheese and wine will officially contain calories again. Genuinely aggrieved.

The energy I'm bringing into 2025

Thrilled to announce that my daughter has just burst into my room – where I was fast asleep, minding my own business – to inform me that she had a bad dream. Can confirm that my standard response of "Was it about getting woken up by your children?" went down as well as ever.

Shout out to everyone that's going to be eating like a king on Christmas Day but will be living on toast and foraged scraps in the days immediately before and afterwards because they kind of forgot to buy any normal food.

There's definitely an eight in there. Can you find it? Can you?

…And that really is it

On to 2025! If I keep this shit up it’ll be a minor miracle.

Thanks for your support over the year. You can’t ever know how much I appreciate you all. I wish you all the happiness this year, I really do. And if whoever is in charge could see fit to throw some my way too, I’d be grateful. Cheers!

If you enjoyed this and you’re feeling generous, you can buy me a cup of tea or a glass of wine – or donate to my houseplant addiction fund – here.
