This week, I have mostly been asking ChatGPT to write things for me. Not to skive off, you understand. Just to test whether ChatGPT is so good it will soon replace bloggers entirely, in case I need to quickly learn a new skill. Maybe something in Cyber, with Fatima?
If you don’t know what ChatGPT is, it’s an AI chatbot.
You can talk (or, type words) to it and ask it to write things for you in a style you desire and to the length of your choosing; if it’s suitable (it doesn’t do rude things or encourage violence) it will then scour the internet and come up with a really eerily coherent answer in a matter of seconds. It can write screenplays, dodgy poetry and of course, blog posts.
You can go and test it out here; it’s really quite scarily good.
If I was a non-native writer for a cheap content mill (the like of whom email me regularly), I’d probably be cacking myself. For people who making a living from websites which churn out posts for Google like ‘Five Reasons You Need A Sprinkler System In Your Garden‘ or ‘Seven Ways You Can Make Your Own Glue‘, it’ll be a lot easier, quicker and cheaper to just ask ChatGPT and get some mediocre filler content for free rather than pay someone else to do it, and it would probably make more sense to boot.
But wait. Will ChatGPT replace bloggers like me?!
As someone with a side-line as a content writer, I admit it’s a little worrying. I’d like to think that the content I carefully craft after hours of research is better than a post an AI chatbot can knock out for free in an instant, but to someone who just wants to fill their website up it probably doesn’t really matter – at least until Google can reliably pick up on and disregard AI content.
However, what ChatGPT cannot do is discuss current events. It can’t tell a funny anecdote about something that happened today, it can’t produce brand new ideas and content, and satire is probably beyond it (at the moment).
I’ve decided rather than worrying about competing with it, I’d work alongside it, and I’ve been looking at ways that ChatGPT can help me out.

I think ChatGPT is insanely clever, almost scarily so. As a freelance content writer, often covering some very dull topics, it could well see me out of a job – temporarily at least, until Google decides to come after AI content, which it will. Google is clever like that.
Fortunately writing dry business-blog content isn’t responsible for a large part of my income, and it’s not my favourite thing to be doing either (although if you’d like to pay me to write about… Well, anything really, hit me up).
I’d MUCH rather be writing about random current events, my own life and other nonsense from my brain…Like this.
So no, in summary, I agree with the Chatbot itself. I don’t think that ChatGPT will necessarily replace bloggers like me, but I do think it could definitely be another amazing timewaster. Sigh.
