Vaping: What Parents Should Know

By Ollie Norman, Content Marketing Manager at LiQuid

In recent years, the popularity of e-cigarettes and vaping has skyrocketed among teenagers. This alarming trend has left many parents feeling concerned and uncertain about how to address the issue with their children. As a parent, it is crucial to be well-informed about vaping and its associated risks. Being knowledgeable on the subject can help you communicate more effectively with your teen and provide guidance on making healthy choices.

This blog aims to provide parents with essential information about e-cigarettes and vaping, health risks, and effective ways to approach the conversation with their teens. By being well-informed, you can give yourself the tools to navigate this challenging issue.

Understanding E-Cigarettes and Vaping

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid containing nicotine and other chemicals, turning it into an aerosol that is inhaled (or “vaped”) by the user. There are various types of vapes and e-cigarettes available – each has its own design and features, but all serve the same purpose: to deliver nicotine to the user.

A report from Public Health England estimates that vaping is 95% less harmful than tobacco, therefore making vaping a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. However, research suggests that vaping may still pose health risks, depending on the health of the individual vaping. Vape liquid contains nicotine which can be addicting and may influence one vaper differently or more strongly than another.

The Health Risks of Vaping

In addition to nicotine, research is being conducted on whether e-cigarette users are subjecting themselves to other harmful substances. The British Heart Foundation stated that “we know [vapes] contain significantly fewer of the harmful chemicals [than cigarette]”.

While the above may be true, it is vital to remember that if your child is under 18 and you discover they are vaping, they should be gently discouraged from carrying on the habit until they are of an age where the law allows them to make that decision for themselves. Peer pressure and trendiness have driven many underage youths to start vaping disposable devices, and this can lead to a nicotine addiction while their brains are still developing.

The general rule is if you have never smoked or vaped, don’t start either – this applies to under 18s as much as adults. Teens seldom follow all the rules of course and it is important to have the knowledge needed to manage their behaviour in a healthy way.

The long-term health effects of vaping are still being studied. While there is some evidence to suggest that vaping could have an impact on brain development in adolescents, this is only in extreme cases where an individual has been vaping excessively. For developed adults who use the substance in moderation, this is not a concern.

Parents often voice concerns that 18+ teens who vape may be more likely to transition to traditional cigarette smoking, which carries even greater health risks. In some cases, this may be true, but in reality many do the opposite – choosing to vape instead of smoking. While the risks of vaping are still being understood, it is considered safer than smoking.

Talking to Your Teen about Vaping

If you want to talk to your child about vaping, it is best to approach the conversation in an informed way, avoiding condescending tones. It is most likely that your teen has already heard about the many dangers of vaping, and simply explaining these to them again will not do much to persuade them against doing so.

Instead, create a safe and open environment; ensure that your teen feels comfortable discussing the topic by creating an open and non-judgmental atmosphere. Let them know that you are there to listen and support them.

Make an effort to hear your teen’s perspective, and try to understand their reasons for vaping or considering vaping.

Provide your teen with accurate information about the health risks associated with vaping, including nicotine addiction, harmful substances in e-cigarette vapour, and potential long-term health effects.

Encourage your teen to ask questions and express their thoughts and concerns about vaping. Reinforce the importance of ongoing dialogue on this issue and other health-related topics, such as whether your child is using vaping as a way to quit smoking.

If your teen is already vaping, offer them support and resources to quit, or encourage them to move to nicotine-free products. This may include connecting them with a healthcare professional, accessing cessation programs, or using nicotine replacement therapies under medical supervision. Informing them that they exist and offering your support may be the best course of action.

The importance of staying informed and proactive

As a parent, it is crucial to stay informed about any modern developments and trends to effectively guide your teen in making healthy choices – including vaping and its associated risks. If your child is over 18 and wishes to vape, instead of buying cheap, throwaway and often unregulated vape products, encourage your child to purchase reliable, high-quality vaping devices and supplies to minimise these risks. Maintain an open dialogue about the topic and stay updated on the latest research and developments.

Promote a healthy lifestyle for your teen by encouraging them to engage in regular physical activity, maintain a balanced diet, and develop effective stress management strategies. By focusing on overall wellness, you can help your teen make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

By staying informed, proactive, and engaged, you can play a vital role in guiding your teen through the true risks of vaping. Together, you can work towards promoting a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle for your adolescent.
