How to make your bedroom beautiful

This is a collaborative post: When it comes to decorating, which rooms are the first that come to mind? The kitchen and bathroom? The living room? Your study or the playroom? A lot of the time, the rooms we concentrate on first are the ones we see the most or the ones that our guests are going to find themselves in when they come over (and hopefully, guests will be able to start coming over again very soon).

So what about your bedroom? Although you probably spend more solid time in there than anywhere else – although this will depend on your sleeping habits, and those of your family – you don’t actually see it. In this busy world of ours, we stumble out of bed first thing and then don’t re-enter the bedroom until it’s time to fall back onto the mattress again. The only slight detour from this plan is when we have clean clothes to put away, so the bedroom door is opened again. But then, just as swiftly as we went in, we’re out again, doing something else.

So the bedroom tends to be forgotten about when it comes to redecorating, and this is a big shame. Having a beautiful bedroom makes a difference, and you never know, you might even want to spend more time there. Read on for some useful bedroom decorating tips that will help you make the most of what really should be your sanctuary.

Choose The Right Sized Furniture

Finding the right bedroom furniture is an obvious first step in making your bedroom a beautiful one. But furniture that’s the wrong size, whether that’s too big or too small, will have the opposite effect, leaving the bedroom looking overcrowded or lacking and entirely uncomfortable.

The best place to start is by having a scale floorplan of your bedroom space to hand. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it should detail the layout of the room, including doors, windows, and radiators, and the lengths of the walls. In this way, when you’re shopping for furniture, you can be sure it’s going to fit before you get it. And you’ll know what space you have left over too.

Storage

It won’t matter how gorgeously decorated your bedroom is if you have to leave your clothes lying about in piles or your shoes sitting out on the floor. To make the most of the room itself, and to free up as much space as possible (as well as giving you the chance to have a tidy, grown up bedroom to enjoy), you need to add as much storage as you can.

A wardrobe with sliding doors can work wonders since you can store plenty in it, and it won’t encroach too much on the room because of the way the doors open. A bed that has storage underneath it is also fantastic – some have drawers that slide out (and these can be bought separately), and others involve lifting the mattress platform. The more storage you have the better, so always look for ways you can add it to your room.

Keep It Simple

A busy looking bedroom is not going to be conducive to a good night’s sleep, and it won’t make you feel glad you took the time to redecorate this space that only you and your partner really ever see.

The key when it comes to bedrooms is to keep it simple. One colour on the walls (and ceiling too – think of the ceiling as a fifth wall to help with decoration), a few pieces of good furniture, some subtle decoration in the bedding, curtains, and perhaps a rug, and that should be enough to make it your favourite room in the house.
