This is a collaborative post: If you are one of the millions of people suffering from acne, you are most likely very familiar with breakouts and acne scars. Though acne scars can be one of the most distressing things about acne, it is possible to find the best acne scar treatment.
Types of Scars
Acne scars occur when the breakout penetrates the deeper layers of the skin and causes tissue damage. Typically, an acne scar may appear in one of two ways: as an indentation (atrophic scar) or as a raised area (hypertrophic scar) on the surface of the skin. Funnily enough, the appearance of a raised scar on the skin is the body’s way of trying to repair the wound (acne) by producing excess collagen. The type of acne scar will influence the treatment that you receive.
The risk of scarring is increased by the type of acne (more likely with Cystic acne), by squeezing or popping an acne pimple, or if the acne has been untreated for a long time.
Getting rid of acne scars
Acne scars are distressing and leave most people frantically searching for the best acne scar treatment. Luckily, there are in-office as well as at-home treatments which one can pursue. Here are some that you may or may not be familiar with:
PRP Facial with Microneedling
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is considered a ‘natural treatment’ because it does not use any chemicals. In this process, a patient’s blood is taken and centrifuged so that the white blood cells can be used. A professional-grade derma-roller is used to create small punctures in the affected area so that the PRP can be injected. The microneedling allows the PRP to penetrate more deeply into the skin for better results.
Dermal Fillers
This injects hyaluronic acid into the skin to stimulate collagen production. When used to treat depressed scars, it lifts the skin upwards. This can also help to fight the signs of aging.
Laser Treatment
Best used with raised scars, the heat from the laser removes the top layer of the skin to break up scar tissue while simultaneously encouraging the growth of healthy new skin cells in its place.
Chemical Peels
These utilize strong acids to remove the top layer of skin and reduce deeper scars.
At-home treatments
Many products on the market can be used to try and treat acne scars. Most of these products involve retinol (increases the rate of cell regeneration and helps with scarring), Alpha hydroxy acids (such a lactic acid and glycolic acid), or Salicylic acid. Others may make face masks with aloe vera, turmeric, and honey. Though the efficacy of these at-home remedies and products is not known, it is important to avoid products or ingredients that may cause skin irritation.
Though acne scars can be a very frustrating problem, it is important to remember that you are not alone and there are many treatment options currently available. Do not let acne hold you back. Speak with an expert today and let them help you to find the treatment option that is right for you.
