LED light therapy masks are the latest big deal in the beauty world, with the reviews saying fantastic things. I’ve had microneedling before and genuinely felt glowing for several weeks afterwards but it’s time consuming, costly and fairly invasive – not to mention you can’t really go out in public for a few days afterwards. Is the CurrentBody Skin LED light mask a simple and non-invasive way to get a similar effect? I thought I’d try it out.

What are LED light therapy masks?

Light therapy has been around for decades, with dermatology clinics offering treatments to give the skin a more youthful appearance, improve skin tone and reduce blemishes.

More recently, LED light therapy masks have become popular self care purchases for at-home beauty treatments thanks in part to celebrity endorsements from the likes of Halle Berry and probably some Kardashians, and being featured in popular shows like Emily in Paris (no, I’ve not seen it…).

The CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask is one of the most popular and best rated home LED light therapy masks on the market with excellent reviews. However with an RRP of £279 it’s fair to say it’s quite an investment. Even with the 15% discount you can get using my discount code (FRANCB) it will set you back over £237 so you want to know it’s going to be worth it.

How do LED light masks work?

Put very simply, LED light therapy masks use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to rejuvenate the skin. Masks like the CurrentBody LED light mask are made of flexible silicone so that the mask can always be in contact with the face so that the light can penetrate properly. LED light therapy masks work by emitting different wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin at different depths. Each colour of light has a specific benefit for the skin:

  • Red light (630-700 nm) is thought to stimulate collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improve skin elasticity and firmness. The CurrentBody LED light mask combines Red (633nm) and Near-Infrared (830nm) LEDs in order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Blue light (400-450 nm) is often used to target acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation.
  • Green light (520-550 nm) is believed to reduce hyperpigmentation and improve skin tone.
  • Yellow light (570-590 nm) is thought to improve circulation and lymphatic flow, which can help reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness under the eyes.

LED light therapy masks are usually used for around 10 minutes at a time, a few times a week. They are generally safe for most people, although those with certain medical conditions (such as epilepsy or light-sensitive skin) should avoid using them.

The CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask review: How to use it

Firstly, the power unit must be charged using a USB charger, and then plug the mask into the power unit. I have found that once charged this lasts at least a week if not two.

Your face needs to be thoroughly cleansed of make up to allow the light to penetrate or it won’t work. For this reason it’s become part of my bedtime skincare routine. If you are feeling like your skin needs an extra boost, you can add the CurrentBody Hydrogel Face Mask underneath the mask to hydrate and plump the skin.

If your eyes are light sensitive then you can wear the included goggles; they’re the same as you might get at a tanning salon. However, the lights are safe and you can use the LED mask without the goggles.

Place the last around the head, using the headstrap to keep it in place. I found that putting my hair in a ponytail and then placing the headstrap above it helped to keep it closed to my skin around my jaw.

Press the button on the power unit until the LEDs come on, and then relax for ten minutes. The LEDs will automatically turn off after 10 minutes, at which point you remove the mask, wipe it down and place it in the storage bag. You can then add moisturiser to your face.

The process is very quick and entirely pain free and non-invasive, and can be repeated up to once a day.

What’s it like to use?

It’s quite a pleasant, relaxing sensation. It doesn’t feel hot or uncomfortable and there is no pain whatsoever. The LEDs weren’t too bright however my advice would be just to lie back and close your eyes for ten minutes although you can stick the power unit in your pocket and wander around if you want to scare your kids.

But… does it actually work?

The website claims that the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask can reduce wrinkles by 35% in just four weeks of use, which seems like a very bold claim indeed.

There is some science to back up the claims – for example a 2018 study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that using a combination of red and near-infrared LED light therapy for 12 weeks led to significant improvements in skin texture, firmness, and overall appearance in participants with mild to moderate facial lines and wrinkles.

At almost forty, with a fairly lacking skincare routine devoid of any expensive products, and no regular beauty treatments or botox etc I feel like I definitely have enough wrinkles to test the effectiveness of the mask.

Here are some photos taken without filters or make up, prior to using the LED mask.

I’ve been using the mask regularly for three weeks now.

I’ll be honest; I like using it. It is pleasant and relaxing if you lie down and close your eyes.

However, I’m not convinced there are any positive improvements in my skin. It hasn’t got rid of any of my wrinkles or plumped my skin, much to my disappointment, and I still look like a haggard 39 year old mum of two and not a 20 year old supermodel. I’ll keep using it for sure, and update again if anything changes.

  1. Interested to see how you get on. I feel like I have aged loads in the last year (I blame the teen) so am looking for something to make me feel better about myself.
