This is a collaborative post: If you’re finding it super boring to write your blog right now, it could be due to a variety of things. Maybe you’re running out of stuff to say? Maybe ideas aren’t flowing as regularly as they used to? Maybe you sit there staring at a blank word document, the cursor blinking in front of you, and have no clue how to get started?
These are all signs that something is going wrong on your blogging journey! And whilst a bit of writer’s block is nothing to worry about, when it becomes chronic it could be a sign you’re bored beyond belief.
And when you’re bored, you’re always going to want to find something else to do. In the meantime, your audience retention will slip through your fingers, but there doesn’t seem to be much you can do about it!
So, how do you beat the boredom and find passion in your content again? It’s going to take a bit of effort but you can do it with tips like those below. Try a few of them at a time and see which ones work for you and your content creation style.
Find Inspiration Elsewhere
Sometimes all we need to do is stop creating content and start consuming it a bit more. If you’re finding it boring to write things off your own back, why not search around for a bit of inspiration? Find some other bloggers who write about topics you’re interested in and sign up to their newsletters. Every time they post something new, check it out and see what you think!
You may find you recognise certain themes and motifs in someone’s writing compared to yours. It’s quite common for topics to cross thresholds between bloggers, and if you’re reading content similar to the kind of thing you want to write, you’re going to notice common tones, styles, and phrases. And if they can do it, so can you!
Collaborate with Another Blogger
Is there someone in the blogging sphere you’re friendly with? Why not ask them if you can write a post together? Or a series of posts responding back and forth to each other? Collaborating is a good way to bring out content on a regular basis, as you’ve got someone else there to keep you accountable.
If that’s the main thing you’re worried about with being bored of blogging, try out this method. It might take a bit of effort to get someone else to agree, but it’s definitely worth it if you want to get back into the groove and do something creative. You could even write something for each other and post it on each other’s blog. That means you have to write something of high quality!
Work with a Brand
There’s nothing like a bit of motivation than working with a brand who’ll pay you for your work! So why not think about using an opportunity like this to help you get back into blogging? It’s wonderful to have a passion for writing, but if you can’t spare much more time or energy without being paid, this is the method for you.
Plus, it’s a lot easier to find a brand to work with than you might think. It’s really simple thanks to some innovative online tools; for example, for new blogging opportunities sign up here! Or if there’s a brand you’d specifically like to work with, think about reaching out directly, either via their business email or through social media DMs.
Create a Different Kind of Content
Is it writing you’re getting bored of? But you still want to create some content? Then try creating something different, such as a video, or an infographic, or a podcast. Sometimes you just need to vary the medium through which you spread your message or tell your story.
Each of these post types start with writing something, so they won’t be too unfamiliar to you. You just then turn your writing into something more – you can either use a browser program or download audio and video software for free.
Experiment here, make some imperfect things, and have some fun with these different kinds of content. You don’t have to be amazing at it, you just need to try something new to relight the spark you have for blogging.
Engage Your Audience
It’s good to bring your audience into your struggle. After all, it’s nice to be transparent with the people following you, as it helps you to be relatable and seem like someone they can chat with. On the other hand, getting this kind of engagement right when you need it can spur you on in the moment, and make you want to create more content for the people who will be so happy to receive it.
To generate this kind of engagement in one go, think about running a competition or a giveaway. If you received a product as a result of a sponsorship, this is something you can put up as a prize, or you can offer a money reward, or you could offer the chance for their own written work to be featured on your blog. But if none of those sound quite right, there are many other rewards you could offer as well.
Travel and Write
Traveling for inspiration is another great way to bring a sense of renewed passion into your blogging life. And if you’ve got a business or lifestyle blog, travel is a great new category to add. It’ll fit well into what you’re already doing, no matter where you want to go or what you get up to whilst you’re there.
After all, an entrepreneur can write travel articles from a networking angle, or if you’re flying to visit an international conference. And if you’re a lifestyle blog already, you can write these posts as an extension of your current day to day life. The more exciting, and the more ‘exotic’ your destination, the more you’re going to have to say. You can even write on location if you’d like – wouldn’t that help beat back the boredom!
Guest Post on a Site You Love
Have you ever guest posted before? If not, now’s a perfect time to start. And if you have, why not reignite your love for blogging by working with a site you love? If you’ve already been published in a couple of other places, it won’t be hard to attract new attention your way.
But if you haven’t got work anywhere other than your own front page, this doesn’t have to set you back. You just need to prove to your potential guest posting site that you’re willing to put in the work and bring a passionate, well researched, and on brand piece.
Tap into Your Fiction Skills
Do you write a mixture of nonfiction and fiction? Or do you focus mostly on the former for your blog, seeing as you’re writing about your life and your experiences? Because even when it’s creative nonfiction, it still doesn’t quite reach the heights of real fiction. But if you try out fiction for a little while, it might just bring you back into feeling energised about your writing in general.
Tapping into fiction just for a little while shows you what your written voice is really capable of. And when you read it back and/or show these passages to those around you, you may just be impressed by the way you sound and the narrative you’re able to craft.
Take a Break
And finally, why not just take a break and see if that feeling of boredom ebbs away? Sometimes you just need to go on hiatus for a while and let that burnt out feeling fix itself. You don’t need to push yourself, and you definitely don’t need to torture yourself over what you can and can’t do right now.
Taking a break is good for both the mind and body. And really, if you try to push out content when it’s not ready, you might just damage your viewership numbers anyway. After all, the quality of your writing might dip, and there might be no love in your paragraphs. When you think about it like this, it’s a lot easier to step away for a little while. If you work with affiliate marketing, you’ll still make money in the meantime.
Boring Blog? It’s Time to Find Your Passion Again!
If you’re finding it boring to blog, and you’re getting worse and worse at keeping things updated, it’s time to either find a new angle or take a break! You deserve to enjoy blogging, and finding your passion in your writing again, but you also deserve to have a breather if it’s getting to be too much.
So experiment, take on new categories, find inspiration in someone else’s content, and even start writing fiction. The more creative you can be, the easier it is to prove to yourself that you’re capable of running a fun and successful blog!
