The second UK lockdown has just begun and is set to run for at least the next four weeks, with non-essential shops, restaurants and pubs all shut.
The weather outside isn’t too great either what with it being November, so now is the perfect time to do a little bit of DIY including redecorating the kids’ bedrooms. In particular, my oldest is now almost seven and having last redecorated with a bright pink makeover over two years ago, she’d like something a bit more muted and less bright.
We are both still working here, so there will be no major transformations, but these are the things we could do easily to change up the look, and you can too.
A good declutter
First thing’s first: Number one on our list is to make space by ditching things that are no longer needed.
Clothes that don’t fit, soft toys that aren’t played with, books that are really too young, toys that have fallen out of favour and any socks which don’t have a partner. They can all be bagged up and put in the loft, and donated to charity once the shops re-open.
Apart from the socks, no one wants those.
Walls
Although non-essential shops and hospitality businesses are shut, DIY and hardware stores are permitted to remain open during lockdown. However, you can avoid the shops by doing Click & Collect at places like B&Q so if you want to wallpaper re-paint, you can get everything you need.
If you don’t really fancy re-painting the whole room, a feature wall is a good alternative particularly if they favour bright or dark colours. Or, how about a frog-tape pattern design if you’re feeling particularly brave?
Not your walls, or just don’t fancy the mess? How about investing in some art or posters to change the look and brighten things up; they are also a lot easier to change when your child grows out of them.
Floor
Admittedly, it’s not the best time to rip up the carpet, but a good carpet cleaner can make an old beaten up carpet look like new! It’s also really satisfying, if a little disgusting to see the amount of muck it drags up.
A new rug can also change the entire look and colour scheme of a room for a fraction of the cost of a new carpet, and it won’t matter so much when the kids inevitably spill things on it and can be easily replaced when a new colour scheme is desired.
Curtains and bedding
Similarly, new curtains and bedding can completely change the look or theme of a room. From comic book characters to something a bit more classy and grown up,
Furniture
There are currently long wait times on new furniture deliveries but what about giving the old furniture a new lease of life, with a coat of paint to match the room?
Chalkboard paint is really popular and comes in different colours; not just black! This pink chalkboard paint would be perfect for my daughter’s room so that she can draw on the cupboards and make lists, without getting into trouble.
