Missing the gym? Creating your own yoga studio at home in eight steps

This is a collaborative post: If you’re missing yoga, then why not go DIY and make your own home yoga studio?

Yoga is a great hobby for both body and mind. It encourages fitness and muscle strength as well as calming, and relaxation and is an excellent daily habit to get into.

With all gyms and yoga studios being closed right now for the next month at least, many people will be thinking about doing yoga at home. Even if you’re completely new to yoga, there are hundreds of YouTube videos which can take you through from beginner level all the way to expert.

Unfortunately for those wanting to do yoga from home, one of the most important aspects of it is being able to relax in a calming and serene environment. This isn’t particularly easy to do if you don’t have a dedicated space.

However, if you have a little-used room in your house, then now might be the time to convert it into a dedicated yoga studio!

How to create the perfect home yoga studio in eight steps

1) Declutter the space

If you are familiar with a yoga studio, you’ve probably noticed that they are sparse and calming, and devoid of clutter. The first thing you need to do is get rid of anything that doesn’t need to be there; certainly anything distracting. Personally I’d opt for a big bin bag.

2) Get the right lighting

Yoga studios need soft mood lighting.

Traditionally this would be candlelight, but lamps with dimmable bulbs are probably a safer option if you want to be able to truly relax and not worry about setting the carpet on fire should you fall asleep while meditating.

3) Decorate in soft, neutral colours

If you are thinking about redecorating, then using muted colours on the walls will make for a much more relaxing atmosphere.

If you can’t re-paint, then hanging large neutral artworks or tapestries could be a good alternative.

4) Use scents to aid relaxation

Scented candles or incense are obvious suggestions, however wax melts can provide a lovely scent and with a warmer are much safer than candles as there is no flame.

Choose calming scents like eucalyptus or lavender to help your body and mind to relax and aid meditation.

5) Add plants to bring nature in

Plants are a great addition to your home yoga studio, bringing the outdoors and nature inside. This can be really grounding and help meditation, and of course they help purify the air too.

6) Choose furniture wisely

The room might be bare but the very least you will need somewhere to store your essential equipment; your yoga mat, blocks, towels and pillows.

An old, wooden trunk if you can find one might be the perfect investment. Anything too modern might break the ‘zen’. Check online selling sites for bargains.

7) Accessorise

It might be cheesy but surely every home yoga studio needs a Buddha statue, and you can usually find them on sale at TK Maxx.

Anything natural and grounding, like plants or seashells, are a great addition to your yoga space.

8) Get the right technology

Soft, relaxing music for meditation is available online or you can download albums specifically for yoga.

Make sure you invest in a good Bluetooth speaker to play it through.
