Yoto Mini Product Recall: What has happened?

Yoto have become aware of seven incidents globally – one in the UK and six in the US – of the battery in the Yoto Mini overheating when at a high state of charge. There have been no injuries.

To put this into perspective, around 340,000 Yoto Minis have been sold worldwide and it is a very small number reported as being affected, however Yoto have taken this matter extremely seriously and have been working with a team of independent battery and product safety experts globally to understand how and why this happened and to identify a fix.

Please note that only the Yoto Mini uses a battery from this supplier and Yoto Classic Players are not affected

What action has Yoto taken?

Yoto has engaged with Trading Standards and other regulators and they are aware of this corrective action, including the provision of a Yoto Mini Smart Cable to all Yoto Mini customers, as well as an automatic software update which has already been implemented.

These steps will help prevent the battery in the Yoto Mini potentially overheating by stopping it charging when it reaches a certain point.

They have currently halted production of the Yoto Mini while they work on resolving this issue and have stopped supply from this Yoto Mini battery supplier.

What do existing Yoto Mini owners need to do?

  1. This remedy offered by Yoto is totally unacceptable. The original instructions say that the player has to be charged via a USB-C cable (not the one supplied). I liked the flexibility of being able to charge anywhere via any cable. My 4 year old or his grandparents when baby sitting aren’t going to remember what cable to use, so the device will remain a hazard regardless of them sending a replacement cable. Also what happens when the cable breaks – I’m held to ransom by whatever Yoto chooses to charge for a new one.

I bought this player on my credit card as bundle that cost over £100 so I’ve contacted my credit card company and asked them for a refund under section 75 of the consumer credit act. They say that I’ve got a valid claim and will process it and refund within the next 4 – 5 weeks.

    1. This was a voluntary recall – based on a very small number of units. Personally, I am satisfied that they’ve dealt with it well and I’m happy for my son to keep using his Yoto, but by all means act disproportionately and shout all around the internet about it. I’m sure that will help!
