With some pretty tall hedges in our garden in need to a trim, we agreed to review the VonHaus cordless pole hedge trimmer.

There is no denying that this summer has been a bit of a washout. At the time of year where it should be sandals, shorts and after school playdates in the park, it’s all getting a bit tedious now.
It’s either freezing (the heating kicked in last week; it’s not just me that thinks it’s cold and rubbish, there is actual evidence) or muggy or raining. This means that, among other things, it’s been pretty difficult to get into the garden and put our new hedge trimmer from VonHaus to the test!
Finally though, some good weather – and so we got into the garden to tend to our rather overgrown bushes.
Specification of the VonHaus 20v Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer review
The VonHaus cordless pole hedge trimmer has a telescopic pole with a reach of up to 2.44m. The blades are 45ccm dual-action laser cut blades which claim to slice through branches and twigs up to 14mm thick.
It comes in pieces which need to be slotted together which is easy enough.
The length can be changed to deal with shorter or taller hedges, and the blades can be rotated from -45 degrees to 90 degrees so you can trim the tops easily.
I have to say it didn’t feel entirely stable when the angle was set, and the blades felt like they moved around a bit but it didn’t feel like this was dangerous in any way and it was certainly precise enough for us.
It isn’t particularly heavy, and there’s a shoulder strap so even someone small can operate it confidently.
To operate the hedge trimmer, there’s a two-stage safety trigger which you have to hold down with both hands and keep depressed, so you don’t accidentally lop your arm off while tending to your hedges.
The VonHaus 20v Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer is powered by a 20V lithium battery (compatible with the rest of the VonHaus 20V Max Lithium-ion G Range) which charges up fairly quickly (in about an hour) and lasts around 45 of use minutes in my experience.
This means there are no cables to contend with which is good from a safety perspective.
Unfortunately being battery powered rather than mains does mean that it struggles to go through woody growth and it couldn’t tackle the top of our camellia with branches around 10mm in diameter.
I would say that is a good tool with which to maintain a garden that has been well looked after, rather than one which (like ours) has been left to grow a bit wild.
It has done much better job of the yew tree and the conifers.
For a garden with high, well maintained border hedges such as yew or conifers, it will make the job of keeping them that way a lot easier.
With a reach of 2.44m, it should be possible to hedges and bushes clear of new growth without unsafe ladders or precarious balancing acts!
