Tips to Feed Your Feline Friend

This is a collaborative post: We all know the happiness and love our furry friends bring into our lives. Like any other pets, cats need proper care and attention to live a healthy life. When it comes to cat food, there are so many options to choose from, much like dog food. Plus, there are various ingredients, each claiming to make your cat live a longer and happier life. Let us know about some highly effective tips to feed your feline friend.

Create a balanced meal

Feed your cat with high-quality food that contains all the essential nutrients required for its health and growth. These nutritional requirements differ depending on their age, daily activity, and lifestyle. Nutrients in a balanced diet aid in their growth and development. Also, it is essential to learn how to read pet food labels. Knowing how to read cat food labels enables you to understand the ingredients and their nutritional value to create a balanced meal for your cat.

Feed the right amount of Food

In addition to choosing the right food, it is also essential to feed the right amount of food to your cat. Both underfeeding and overfeeding can be harmful. As you know overfeeding can cause obesity and underfeeding can lead to nutritional deficiency. If you are feeding canned food, you should read the feeding instructions on its label to know the right amount to feed. If you are feeding other foods like meat or vegetables or cooked food, you should consult your veterinarian to know the amount your cat needs in a meal.

Create a feeding schedule and routine

A feeding schedule allows your cat to know what it should expect at feeding times. Creating a schedule would make the process enjoyable for you and your cat. You can put out the entire day’s serving in their food bowl in the morning and let your cat consume it throughout the day.

On the other hand, you can divide the total food into two or three meals and feed your cat thrice or more a day. If you are feeding wet food, your cat should consume it within 30 minutes of serving.

Choose Canned Food Over Kibble

Cats are carnivorous which means they need meat in their diet to stay healthy. Dry foods do not meet your cat’s nutritional requirements as wet food. Kibble is low in animal protein and water and also it contains a lot of carbohydrates. Over time, buying high-quality canned food helps you save money on your cat food bills.

Keep your cat hydrated

Your cat needs water, and it’s important to make it easy for them. Always have clean, fresh water within their reach. Don’t give your cat milk, as it can upset their stomach. Use ceramic or metal bowls for their water. It’s a good idea to have a second water bowl placed away from their food, maybe under a desk or bed.

Say No to Raw Meat

Don’t ever serve your cat raw meat intended for human cooking. Supermarket and butcher meats are meant for cooking and might have more bacteria. Cooking kills those bacteria, but for pets, it’s safer to stick to raw pet food. However, you should avoid feeding meat when your cat suffers from diarrhea.

Meats are hard to digest even if boiled or cooked in case of an upset stomach. Diarrhea can cause your cat to defecate several times and it will create a mess in its space. Instead, you can feed other cat foods for diarrhea that are made easy to digest and contain minerals to maintain water levels in the intestines. If you cannot make a choice, consult your veterinarian for the right advice.

Feeding Cooked Chicken

People often wonder if it’s okay to give their cat chicken. Well, cats are meat eaters, and in the wild, they feast on raw meat from their prey. But for your pet cat, make sure the chicken is cooked, preferably boiled and bone-free. Don’t go overboard with chicken; it should be a treat alongside their regular diet. Relying solely on cooked chicken for too long can lead to health issues.

Dry vs. Canned Food

Some cat owners stick to dry food. Dr. Kallfelz says that’s okay if it’s complete and balanced. It’s often cheaper and stays fresh longer. Cats on dry diets should have plenty of fresh water, especially if they are prone to urinary tract issues. All cats need fresh, clean water.

Canned cat food, on the other hand, has lots of water, about 70 to 80 percent. It can be a good alternative to dry food. Some cats find it tastier, but they might overeat if it’s always available. This can happen with dry food too.

Try Feeding Toys

Feeding toys make mealtime fun for your cat. Puzzle feeders and food balls tap into your cat’s hunting instincts. They keep your cat active and mentally stimulated. It’s also great for cats trying to lose weight. Instead of eating everything at once, they eat a bit at a time while playing. Just check if they finished the food by the end of the day.

Summing Up

Keeping your cat healthy can be straightforward. Ensure they have fresh water, serve cooked chicken in moderation, avoid raw meat meant for humans, and consider both dry and canned food options. Don’t forget to make mealtime entertaining with feeding toys. Your feline friend will appreciate it!
