Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress review: Can it solve common sleep problems?

Disclaimer: I was sent this Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress to review free of charge, but words and pictures are mine. See more information here. Use the code Fran20OFF1409 for a further £20 off.

As a parent, sleep is something I took for granted for many years and then was so cruelly ripped away from me. Although these days, my children do tend to sleep through the night (barring illness, nightmares and wanting to chat about the big mysteries of the world), even though I spend, conservatively, around a third of my life in my bed I don’t always feel like I get a good night’s sleep. Sometimes this is entirely my own fault (I’m not very sensible and incapable of having an early night) – other times I’ll get really hot (thanks, hormones) and or am easily woken by my partner.

I know that a decent pillow and a good quality mattress really helps.

Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress review

My previous mattress was budget IKEA Hövåg pocket sprung mattress with a layer of foam. Although they were often recommended as a good budget option, reviews were mixed and they’ve since been discontinued. It was a decent enough mattress for the price – I can neither fault nor effusively praise it really; it did a job – but what’s the point of having a brand new fancy bedroom but the same old bed?

We were offered an upgrade, in the form of an Origin Hybrid Pro mattress to review.

The Hybrid Pro is Origin’s most advanced mattress, with eight different layers offering cushioning, pressure relief, cooling, and medium-firm support whether you’re a side, front or back sleeper.

Sounds good, right?

The mattress was delivered by a two-man delivery team into the house. The Hybrid Pro mattress is heavy (particularly if you have a king size bed like we do, it weighs around 50kg) so unless you’re very strong, you will probably need two of you to get it up stairs (I didn’t ask the delivery guys whether they’d deliver it to the room, it seemed a bit forward!).

The mattress comes rolled up and vacuum sealed in plastic wrapping so it’s easier to manoeuvre, and rapidly expands once it’s unboxed and in position on the bed so you may want to leave it for a few hours before using it for the first time. There are handles on the side so with two of you, it can be easily moved.

It will be fully inflated within 48-72 hours (but you can sleep on it before this).

What the Hybrid Pro mattress is made from:

I’ve pinched the below image from the Origin website; this is what the eight layers of the Hybrid Pro Mattress are made from and their various functions.

These layers of course mean that the mattress is thick, measuring 31cm tall; you’ll need a deep fitted sheet to go round it.

Even when you have good sleep hygiene, there are plenty of reasons why you might not necessarily get a great night’s sleep. I was interested to see how the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress might be able to help me!

Getting too hot

Women of a certain age will no very possibly be able to sympathise here; getting too hot at night and waking up sweaty is the biggest reason why sleep eludes me. I make sure that we have a thin, breathable duvet and cotton sheets but heat trapped in a mattress can of course make this so much worse.

The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress we were sent to review has cooling graphite crystal latex which keeps you up to 10 degrees cooler. I’ve slept well and had fewer incidences of waking up in a sweat – even with the recent hot weather, I’ve not overheated. The real test will be when the summer rolls around but currently I’m very pleased with it!

Being woken by your partner

Having someone to sleep next to is lovely, but if you’re a light sleeper like I am, it can keep you both awake which is less than ideal. Origin claims to have Motion Isolation technology, and top class memory foam material that absorbs kinetic energy from movements, which means that you are less likely to feel someone else tossing and turning or getting out of bed.

Although it’s not scientific, I’ve definitely noticed that I have been woken by him closing the door a few times rather than by him getting out of bed. I’ve also been able to drift back off afterwards easier!

Being uncomfortable due to lack of support

The high-density ‘HexaGrid Plus’ which Origin use in their mattresses provides support, pressure relief & optimal temperature regulation. The mattress is firm enough to provide good support, but has a polar silk pillow top for comfort too, and 5700 titanium springs for additional lumbar support. As a result, you will be comfortable and won’t suffer from aches and pains in the morning.

How long is the Origin Pro Mattress guaranteed for?

Origin have a 100% money-back guarantee. You can test out the mattress for up 200 nights (but at least 25 nights) in the comfort of your home and if you aren’t convinced then you can email them to get a refund. I don’t know how this works once you’ve emailed or how quickly the mattress is collected/refunded as we won’t be returning ours, but man mattress retailers offer similar guarantees.

NB this doesn’t include mattresses which are damaged or stained and you need to keep the original packaging so that it can be returned in good condition as any mattresses which are returned are donated to charities.

Origin mattresses also come with a 15 year warranty.

How much and where to buy the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress
