It might be Easter, but beware – these Jurassic World Dominion Captivz Eggs from Character Toys don’t contain chocolate, but something much scarier!

(Slime, I’m talking about slime. Rented carpets, ya’ll). And sand, and gel – and three hidden pieces of dino which you can snap together to form your Captivz dinosaur toy figure.

Let’s see what’s inside the different types of Jurassic World Dominion Captivz Eggs.

The smaller of the Jurassic World Dominion Captivz eggs cost £4.99 (available here at Smyths Toys) which make them a great collectible toy. Each reusable black plastic egg contains a bag of slime, a battle token and one of fourteen different three-piece pop n lock dinosaurs including two ultra rare metallic dinosaurs – including this green giganotosaurus which we hatched from one of our eggs. There are more dinosaurs which will be released soon.

We also hatched a standard giganotosaurus. These dinos measure about 7cm when put together. Of course if you collect lots of them you can mix and match the pieces or use them as puzzle pieces to see who can put their dinosaur together properly in the quickest time.

The battle tokens are a bit like Top Trumps – they show the height, weight, killer rating and intelligence of each dinosaur so you can pick a category and see whose dinosaur wins! The instructions to play are included inside the pack.

The slime – which is metallic blue and veeeery goopy – comes in 50g bags so you can’t keep it unless you decant it into an airtight container.

The large eggs – which are again reusable but bright orange with a dinosaur eye hologram on the outside – measure about 17cm tall. They cost £12.99 (available from Smyths Toys here) and inside you get a larger three piece pop n lock dino which you find inside packs of slime, prehistoric sand (kinetic sand) and ‘amber’ which is a solid gel.

I recommend you open the eggs outside on a tuff tray or similar, or at least somewhere you can cover as it might get messy! I did not. I regret this.

We hatched out a baryonyx with a mechanical arm. I’ve never seen a dinosaur with a mechanical arm, but you bet I’m going to watch the new film just for that and I’ll be bitterly disappointed if he isn’t in it.

There’s also a battle token you can use to battle other Jurassic World Dominion Captivz Eggs fans, and a glow in the dark sticker sheet!

Jurassic World Dominion Captivz Mega Eggs

The new range also has MEGA eggs (RRP £24.99) which come with three pop n lock dinos, a pull back dino vehicle, slime, battle tokens and stickers. There’s also a game mat and dice. We didn’t get one of these but you can buy them from Amazon here or Smyths Toys here.

What we thought

The process of digging out the dino from the slime, sand and gel in the Jurassic World Dominion Captivz Dino Dig Surprise Eggs was the best bit. The sand and slime you could re-use if you use a sealed container but if you discard these then you still have the reusable plastic egg and the large dinosaur to play with as well as the battle token.

For an RRP of £12.99 that’s not bad; although there are only three to collect and the risk of getting the same one again would put me off buying more for the time being.

The smaller classic eggs are well priced and would make a good pocket money gift although once again the kids said the best part was finding the dinosaur (and the packets of slime haven’t yet been opened, thank heavens for small mercies says my carpet!).

There was a fair amount of plastic rubbish to discard, which was my only real disappointment and something I would like to see less of in future. Other surprise toys have gone down the reusable and recyclable route with their packaging, so there really is no excuse.

Jurassic World Dominion film

The new range of toys have been released in advance of the new Jurassic World film, Jurassic World Dominion which is planned for release in June 2022. As something of a mash up the newest film has Sam Neil, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern (who played Ellie in Jurassic Park) in it as well as Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard from the Jurassic World films. I’m looking forward to it as a fan of the Jurassic Park films – but as it’s a PG-13 I probably won’t be showing my easily-scared children who can make do with the toy eggs which are suitable for kids aged 3 and over.

Where to buy

You can keep an eye on the Jurassic World Dominion Captivz Eggs range at Amazon and Smyths Toys to see when they are released in May.
