We were gifted tickets for a showing of I Believe in Unicorns to celebrate that Kids Week will be back again for 2023. During the whole of August, kids (under 17) go free to select performances at London Theatres with a paying adult, and you can take two more children for half price.

I Believe in Unicorns theatre show review
A one-woman show lasting just under an hour, I Believe in Unicorns is a story by Michael Morpurgo, brought to life by storyteller Danyah Miller.
Set in a library surrounded by books, Danyah tells the story of a young boy called Tomas. Tomas doesn’t enjoy reading or going to school, but becomes spellbound by the stories told by the ‘Unicorn Lady’ librarian.
The clever set makes the books come to life while the story unfolds, with a lot of surprises!
The show is pitched at children aged 6+ and my two (8 and 9) really enjoyed it. It wasn’t too long (there was no interval) and they sat absolutely mesmerised throughout, and talked about it on the way home with is always a good sign!
Knowing very little about the play other than the title before we went, I wondered whether there might be too many unicorns for my eight year old boy (who is adamant he hates anything ‘girly’), but I needn’t have worried. The unicorn references the librarian’s favourite sculpture which she holds while telling her stories. I Believe in Unicorns is just as suitable for boys as unicorn-loving girls. In fact, the story being about another eight year old boy meant he was intrigued from the start!
Performances of I Believe in Unicorns start on the 27th July.
The performance we attended was a special gala show in collaboration with the Reading Agency, who work across the UK to transform lives for the better through the power of reading. The kids were given a goodie bag and a book to take home, which was a great end to the show.
Sadly we weren’t able to stay to see the Q&A with writer Michael Morpurgo as we had to dash to get the train, which is a shame as particularly my oldest would have loved to stay and watch, having read many of his books.
I Believe in Unicorns is showing at the Apollo Theatre until 2nd September at 11.30am and 2.30pm, and you can get Kids Week tickets for £21 for one adult and one child for select performances during August.
