The world today is interconnected more than ever which can sometimes be a bad thing. Namely, our children are heavily exposed to all sorts of negative influences, from access to explicit content to swear words in every social situation imaginable.
Raising the new generation to become good people is now harder than ever for billions of parents worldwide. However, there are steps you can take to ensure your child becomes a genuinely good person.
Lead by example
Have you ever had a teacher who approached you with concerns over your child’s behavior? If you have, then you need to know that there is little teachers can do regarding your children’s education because they spend only a couple of hours with them daily.
You share the brunt of responsibility for educating your child and you should do this by example. Namely, children try to imitate their parents so you have the greatest chances of your children growing up into a responsible adult if you are one yourself. Start small by using polite language and just watch how the young ones pick up this demeanor.
The truth and nothing but the truth
Children have a vivid imagination so sometimes they might come up with stories and lies inadvertently. If you see that your child lied to you (luckily, they are not very good at it at an early age), restrain yourself from telling them off immediately.
Instead, give them a lesson about the importance of always telling the truth, regardless of the consequences. Of course, you too should do your best to tell the truth, because children are more offended than adults when lied to.
Sharing is caring
The biggest problem with the world today is a chronic lack of compassion. We are so engulfed in our own life problems that we fail to notice the plight of others. In order to work on your child’s ability to feel compassionate, teach them to share.
For instance, if you order toys at Funtastic Toy and give them to your kids, tell them that they must share them with their friends. This way, they will learn that sharing is caring, which is a maxim that will later follow them through life.
Reading and being read to
A great aid in helping your children grow into decent enough human beings is reading. At a young age, read to them often, not just before bedtime. The more stories they hear, the more their imagination will develop. Once they are old enough to read, they will pick up books on their own and read them. Feed their drive for knowledge by getting them a library membership or buying them books of various genres.
The importance of socialising
If you wish your children to be kind to others, make sure they get used to human interaction early on. Even if your child is an introvert, stimulate them to attend birthday parties and to hang out with their peers.
This will most definitely be a mixed experience, both positive and negative, but they will learn a ton about human social interaction. Teaching children table manners and bon ton is an integral part of this effort.
Award politeness
It is essential that your children’s upbringing is not based on prohibition and the reiteration of the word “No.” Try to adopt a more assertive approach by rewarding every act of selfishness, compassion and kindness your child does. For example, buy them a bar of chocolate if they open the door for a senior person or even when they remember to say “thank you.”
Parenting is by no means easy today nor was it a walk in the park during the past ages. There are so many negative examples of bad behaviour so you are facing an uphill battle. However, not all is lost; as the aforementioned steps will help you educate your children on the essence of becoming a good person.
