This is a collaborative post: The kitchen is the beating heart of the home and somewhere that should be a family space. When you can create a family-orientated kitchen, not only will it help to bring the family together over food, but you could even encourage the kids to start helping out – learning to cook is an incredibly valuable skill to have and kids can start with small tasks from a young age.
So, how can you go about creating a family-orientated kitchen?
Create a Communal Space
First, you need to make the area communal otherwise people will not spend time there. Having a kitchen island with stools is a great way to encourage people to spend time in the kitchen while food is being prepared, plus it is always handy to have another surface to work with! If you have the space, you could also have a family area with a sofa to make a relaxing corner in the room that is comfortable for the kids and expands the communal area.
Organisation & Storage
The kitchen is also somewhere that can easily become chaotic and cluttered which not only makes it harder to cook but could make it unsafe for kids. In addition to keeping your cabinets neatly organised, shelving is incredibly easy to make and put up with multi tools. You might find this is quite a useful way to help create more space on kitchen countertops, make items easy to reach and add to the overall design aesthetic of your kitchen.
Planning
Following on from this, in order to create a family-orientated space you could put up a chalkboard where you can write out the menu for the week, create a shopping list and, of course, put a few funny jokes or your child’s latest artwork. Fridge magnets and notes can also be another way to make the space more fun and interactive.
Entertainment
Finally, you will want to make the kitchen an enjoyable place to spend time with the kids by equally encouraging them to spend time there. You might want to look into purchasing a built in speakers so that you can play music, or even a TV to follow along with recipes on cooking shows. This will turn the kitchen area into more than just a practical space and somewhere enjoyable for the whole family.
The kitchen is an incredibly important part of the home and families should bond over food, plus you should find that making it a family-oriented space should encourage the kids to show an interest in food and allow them to be in a social environment.
