This is a collaborative post: When it comes to designing your garden, it can be easy to go for simple shapes and designs without really getting creative or thinking outside the box. A square patio, a rectangular deck, a patch of lawn, all of these things can be found in pretty much any gardens across Britain. It’s no surprise that a lot of our gardens look the same!
If you want to inject a bit of personality into your garden design there are plenty of things you can do. To help you get inspired, I’ve pulled together a list of some of the most creative garden designs I’ve come across.
Paths and walkways
Many principles of interior design can be translated into your outdoor space to create flow and movement. People don’t often think about the way the eye is led around the garden, but adding a path or walkway is a great way to create the illusion of a longer, more interesting space.
Did you know that the way you lay your garden path can completely alter the way your garden looks? Straight paths can elongate small gardens by drawing the eye along the length. Curved paths that lead you through flower beds can make a simple space look very enticing.
Paths and walkways help you get from A to B but they can also be an important part of your garden design, dividing different sections and adding interest. You can combine different coloured tiles or use unusual material materials to create a path that complements the aesthetic of your garden perfectly.
Decking designs
Adding garden decking to your outdoor space is a great way to get more use out of it. Lawns are great, but they take a lot of upkeep and they never seem to stop growing. A deck, however, is much easier to maintain and with a bit of planning can be an exciting addition to your garden design.
The things you can do with decking are almost limitless! Simple rectangular decks can become a stand-out feature if you combine different coloured boards to create unique patterns. One of my favourites is the photo frame design that incorporates one colour for the inner portion of the deck and a separate colour for the perimeter.
For an even more intricate design, you can layer sections of decking on top of one another to create a multi-level effect. This is a great way to make use of a small or oddly-shaped space.
Integrated planters
While we’re on the subject of deck design, let’s take a look at some stylish integrated planters. Now, most people with a passion for gardening love to grow plants like flowers and vegetables. However, some gardens lack green space, so planters are a great alternative.
Some of the most innovative planters I’ve seen are made of composite decking & are installed to look as though they’re part of the deck! These planters offer style and functionality, making them the perfect addition to gardens of any size.
