How to keep a cleaner bathroom (without actually having to clean)

This is a collaborative post
Everyone is worried about germs this year, and we’re certainly included in that lot. But the toughest thing about lockdowns and homeschooling is the amount of damage a couple of kids can do to the house when they NEVER leave.

And the bathroom is the worst. The smells, the never-ending dampness, the unexplainable puddles on the floor… I was about to nail the door shut and call it quits.

Eventually, I decided against getting the hammer. Instead, I found some hacks that have reduced my need to scrub and do the washing WITHOUT the bathroom suffering for it.

If you’ve got a house full of rascals or just want a cleaner space and more time to huddle under a pile of blankets (what else is there to do?), then give these tips a try.

Antimicrobial towels

Did you know that towels are the dirtiest things in your bathroom? Actually, that’s not true. They’re the dirtiest things in your entire home

Towels are often damp, and they live in your dark and humid bathroom. That’s the perfect environment for bacteria, mould, and fungus to grow.

And do they ever. The average towel is home to hundreds of times more bacteria than a toilet seat!

Luckily, there’s an easy (and washing-free) fix for that in the form of antimicrobial towels. These towels are made with special materials that don’t let germs grow on them.

We use antimicrobial Soji Towels because they’re all-natural and super soft. They’re made of plush bamboo and woven with pure silver, an antimicrobial element.

Soji are 99.99% effective at killing bacteria, mould, fungus, allergens, and even viruses like COVID-19 on contact.

They’re also super absorbent and quick-drying, so they never drip or feel damp.

But my favorite thing about Soji is how comfy they are. They’re much bigger than other towels, so you can wrap up like a burrito. And the bamboo is also unbelievably soft. It feels like snuggling with a load of kittens!

Also, y’know, it’s nice not to have to worry about E.coli, COVID, and smelly mould all over our towels (oh, yeah—Soji are immune to musty odours!).

I definitely recommend replacing the dirtiest objects in your home with some antimicrobial towels. If you want to try Soji, you can get 50% off a set now.

Keep that lid shut

Your toilet is basically a germ volcano. Every time you flush, an invisible plume shoots out and gives everything in your bathroom a dusting of… well, you don’t want to know.

The easiest way to fight the dreaded plume is to simply shut the lid before you flush.

Research has found that by shutting the lid, you can reduce the germs in your bathroom by up to 50%

And during the pandemic, it’s more important than ever. COVID-19 can spread through fecal matter, and all it takes is one flush by an infected person for said matter to coat your towels, toothbrushes, and pretty much everything else.

Pretty gross. And dangerous. So close those lids!

Make disinfecting fun

Cleaning is pretty lame. But kids don’t know that. That’s why I make it fun to give the toilet seat and sink a little wipe once a day.

A 2-second wipe-down with a disinfectant wipe is a great way to keep germs off surfaces like doorknobs, counters, and toilet bowls. For a gentler, eco-friendly option, you can also explore natural bathroom cleaning methods that cut down on harsh chemicals while keeping everything fresh. And, if you get fun wipes (aka normal wipes with Marvel Superhero or Frozen stickers on them), then kids will be more than willing to give a little wipe when they’re in the bathroom.

To make it more “fun,” tell kids that they can only do it once per day. Scarcity makes them look forward to their little task.

Get a splash guard

Does your bathroom feel more like a locker room than a washroom? It’s because kids use the sink like a swimming pool. There’s not much you can do about this (they’re learning, after all), but you can help out by getting a splash guard.

These barriers keep water from getting in the nooks and crannies behind the sink and causing mould and mildew buildup. You can also put them in front of the sink to prevent water from cascading down your cabinets.

Splash guards come in plenty of colours and designs, so they’re fun for families. And, they can easily be removed for cleaning and when guests come over.

Clean smarter

You don’t have to clean more to have a germ-free bathroom. Just follow these tips and enjoy a cleaner bathroom and more time with your blanket pile.
