Living the simple life: 5 ways to help you reduce the clutter in your home

This is a collaborative post: Homelife and clutter often go hand in hand. And we’re all guilty of hanging onto items “just in case” in the hope of “getting our money’s worth”. The truth is, clutter can be stressful and even anxiety-inducing and you won’t realise how much of an impact it’s having on your mental health until you’ve gotten rid of it.

Clutter attracts clutter and you may be wondering where to begin. So, with this in mind let’s take a look at 5 ways that will help you reduce the amount of clutter in your home. Let’s get started!

Sentimental items

It’s not always easy to let go of things if you think they have sentimental value. Unfortunately, most of the clutter in your home could be attributed to items that you have an emotional attachment to. But did you know that being able to let go of these things will give you more joy and clarity then hanging onto them ever will?

Holding onto old jewellery is a prime example of this. Whether it’s an old engagement ring, a gift from an ex or something that reminds you of an emotional time in your life, selling it on and getting rid of it will help you find closure and help you declutter your home. If you have old, damaged or broken pieces of gold jewellery then you should consider selling them on to a gold buyer for a profit. Click the link for ‘gold buyers near me’. You can then enjoy a tidier home and a little cash injection for your trouble!

Items in the “might use” pile

You might need that fondue set if you have guests around…and that ice cream maker will definitely come in handy. If your home is filled with items that come with an “I might need this one day” mantra, then you should act as soon as possible. Saying goodbye to that warming ice cream scoop or those candle holders you got as a Christmas gift from a relative will dramatically reduce the clutter in your home and set you free!

Stop buying things you’ll only use once

This applies to everything from clothes and shoes to gardening equipment and electricals. Instead of buying more items to clutter up your home and garage, consider borrowing these items from friends and neighbours or renting them for a limited time instead. You’ll save yourself time, money and space.

Paperwork piles

From schoolwork and your personal studies to tax returns, house deeds, appliance instructions, paperwork… files upon files soon add up. It’s difficult to know what to do with it all. Some of these things could suddenly be needed. Instead of living with boxes and boxes of paper files, consider scanning in all your documents and storing them digitally on a cloud instead. It may be time-consuming but it’s worth the effort.

And finally, purge frequently

Keeping on top of clutter is an ongoing process. You may clear out your closet, then return to it a month later and decide to part with more items. Remember to purge your items regularly to keep your clutter under control. You’ll feel amazing!
