There are many benefits to gardening with children as well as lots of fun to be had, so why not try and create a mystical fairyland together, in your own backyard. If you’re looking for some inspiration on how to create a fairy garden with your child, then here are some ideas to get you started.
Start with a theme
The joy of creating a garden fairyland with your child, is that they can fully use their imagination. Before you even get into the garden, you can set up an activity for your little one, where they draw or brainstorm their ideal fairy kingdom.
There are lots of themes to choose from depending on your child’s choice. Do they like the idea of colourful toadstools that the fairies can live in surrounded by brightly coloured flowers? Or would they prefer a magical woodland, where the fairies live in tree trunks or mini wooden houses, decorated with twigs and pinecones? The possibilities are truly endless and exciting!
Set the location
Once you know the theme of your fairyland, you’ll have to decide where it will go in the garden. If you have a dedicated area for all the ornaments, objects and decoration, then you can section it off with suitably miniature fencing, which can usually be found online in a variety of styles and colours.
If you’re short on space, then you can add some soil to a decorative plant pot, and build the fairy garden on top of that! Alternatively, if you have a tree in your garden, you can simply create the fairyland around the base of the trunk, or if the tree has some holes and hollows that you can decorate.
Use different materials
Now the fun can begin and the decoration can start. You can find lots of fairy garden items online or in your local garden centres, that can become the focal point of the fairyland. This could be a fully established fairy house, a mini piece of furniture, or a fairy door that you can add to what’s already present in your garden.
If you’d like, you can create your own fairy houses or doors with your child, which you could do by decorating a shoebox or other pieces of cardboard, or using an old ice-cream tub and lid. Collect natural elements from around the garden to help decorate your creation, such as twigs, leaves or pinecones.
You can embellish the fairy kingdom further by using little stones or pebbles as a path leading up to the magical house or door. You could also add a sparkling stream through the fairy garden by using blue coloured gems placed in a swirly pattern.
Creating the fairy garden is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by all the family, but you can also continue to delight in the little scenes each time you play together in the garden. Who knows, you may create such an inviting fairyland that a magical creature pops by for a visit.
