How to Break Away From Fashion Trends

This is a collaborative post: It honestly seems like now, more than ever, fashion trends are exploding. On the one hand, it gives everyone a chance in all subgroups and subcultures to truly express themselves and who they are. On the other hand, trends are so fast-paced. You can honestly consider most fashion trends nowadays to just be micro-trends that live for days or a couple of weeks rather than a full season or year.

This has, in turn, created a lot of textile waste, and more fast fashion companies just keep popping up, making everyone want to chase after what they have. General speaking trends are just bad. But even if you break away from them, it can honestly make a world of difference. So, here are some ways you can work towards breaking away from these fashion trends!

Start Off By Not Knowing What’s Trending

What?! Yes! If you don’t keep up with fashion and the ever-changing trends, then you’re not going to know what’s ever happening. If you know what’s going on and what’s trending, then you’re going to want to feel more inclined to hop on the bandwagon so you can be a part of what’s in. Whether it’s plus size fashion or anything else, you’re just better off just skipping out on all of it. Don’t go to fashion stores; skip on the magazines, TikTok vids, and even the YouTubers. Just don’t even bother keeping up; that’s the best way to break away from trends.

Get to Know Yourself

What do you genuinely like? What are styles that you like that look good on you and make you feel like you’re being yourself? Know your own style, and don’t get sucked into fashion trends. While it’s a fun idea to try new things, you don’t need to go all out and buy a whole new wardrobe every time something comes in fashion It’s important to think about your own personal style and how you want to present yourself to the world.  Honestly, it takes time to do self-discovery, but it’s entirely worth diving into.

Create a Mood Board

This is going to help you better understand your preferences. It is important to keep your theme consistent with the vibe you are going for, such as Parisian Minimalist Fashion or Bohemian Summer Lookbook. This will also help you to stay away from trends that may be overly commercial or unoriginal. It’s also a good idea to have a back up for your mood board, such as a Pinterest board or some convenient plugin tools that allow you to grab images from the internet quickly. Generally speaking, Pinterest is perfect because it gives you inspo of how you want to dress.

Keep it Classic and Timeless

It’s important to remember that trends are only suggestions, not mandates. Don’t let them pressure you into changing your style or throwing out good clothes just because they’re no longer “in.” And while social media can be a great place for finding inspiration, don’t allow it to make you feel like you have to change who you are just to fit in with the rest of the herd.

Keep your favourite classic pieces in your closet and add in some trendy elements to stay current, but don’t get sucked into the herd mentality! You’ll thank yourself later. Fashion isn’t for everyone. You’ll never go wrong with basics, as these will never go out of fashion. Whether it’s Versace jewellery, satin skirts, or loafers, these will never go out.
