Kids learn a lot from their parents’ behaviour. If you want to encourage your kids to be healthy, living a healthy life yourself can make a big impact. Here are just some of the ways in which you can lead by example.
Be active with your kids
Kids are more likely to be active if they see you being active. While you can take part in your own physical activities such as going to the gym or going cycling by yourself, it’s worth also making time for physical activity with your kids.
This could be as simple as playing games in the park or going on a long walk together. Alternatively, you could try out slightly more unique physical activities together such as trying paddle boarding or taking up martial arts together.
You could also try going on active holidays together. This could be a ski holiday or a camping trip in which you do lots of cycling or walking. A family beach holiday can even be packed full of activities from beach games to water sports. By making holidays partially active, kids will learn to associate physical activity with happy memories.
Eat healthy meals together
If you cook separate meals for yourself and your kids, consider whether you’re both getting the right nutrition. If you’re piling your kids’ plates full of vegetables but not doing the same yourself, you won’t be setting a good example – and your kids are unlikely to see why they should be eating their veggies.
Get into a habit of eating together and try to have similar meals with a similar amount of nutritional value. If they see you enjoying healthy foods, they’ll be more inclined to eat these healthy foods themselves. It could even be worth trying new healthy foods and meals together. Positive reactions to new foods could help to make your kids more open to the idea of trying new foods themselves.
You can even cook healthy meals together to encourage more appreciation for the results. By putting their own time and effort into preparing it, they may be less likely to turn their nose up at it when it is finally served up. You can find ideas for healthy family meals here at Taste of Home.
Make attempts to quit unhealthy habits
There could be certain unhealthy habits that you don’t want your kids to take up later in life. Making attempts to learn how to quit vaping and other unhealthy habits will show your kids that you don’t view these as positive habits.
Smoking is an obvious example. If you regularly smoke and don’t make it out to be a bad thing, your kids will be less likely to see negatively. Nowadays, there are lots of tools and strategies to help quit smoking. Many people take up vaping as a way of moving on from smoking – new electronic cigarette technologies and CF batteries such as the Aspire MIXX Sunbox have made vaping easier and less costly. There are also strategies for giving up such as hypnosis and nicotine gum.
Eating too many snacks or heavy drinking could be other unhealthy habits to break – or at least try to break. Showing attempts to cut down on snacks or alcohol will show your kids that you don’t want them to grow up snacking and drinking all the time. Aside from getting rid of bad habits, you can start making healthier choices like when you seek dental expertise at vista ca dentists.
Set family health goals
A great way of inspiring oneself to be healthy is to set goals. You can also set joint goals with other people. If your whole family are looking to live healthier, such goals could be a great way of getting everyone to live healthier by encouraging friendly competition and a sense of camaraderie. This is most likely to work with families with older kids.
For instance, some families take on weight loss challenges together. This could include keeping everyone’s weight recorded on a calendar and seeing who is able to lose the most amount of pounds each week. This is recommended for older kids struggling with weight problems who may also have overweight parents.
There may also be ways of setting exercise goals using apps. Step counter apps can be great for encouraging friendly competition – you can all compete with one another to walk as many steps as possible per day.
You could also plan to take on challenges as a family. There may be runs or walks that you can train for together. This could include anything from a sponsored race to a mountain climb.
