Edible Halloween decoration tutorial: Step by step spooky candy skulls

This post is a paid campaign written in collaboration with Swizzels. Words and images are mine; see my disclaimer here.

It’s September, the schools are back, and almost instantly there is an autumnal chill to the air; my heating has actually kicked in of its own accord and I’m not sure how to feel about it to be honest.

I’m sure I’ll tire of the cosy nights and darker evenings before too long, but right now I’m loving the autumn colours… and the fact that suddenly the shops are filled with Halloween fun!

Now I’ll be honest, until recently I’ve not been a huge fan of Halloween.

I’m definitely coming around to the idea now the kids are old enough to dress up and have fun. They can’t wait to get into their witch and pumpkin costumes and go to a Halloween party.

I might not be fond of dressing up, but what I do rather like is the fact that from September, you can buy big packs of sweets in preparation for Trick or Treating. The rule is that you then eat them all (they’re only little, one won’t hurt… Sound familiar?!) long before Halloween rocks around and then buy more sweets…

And then, when no one turns up at your door (because you have the lights switched off), you get to eat those too!

All while telling the kids they can’t touch because they aren’t for them.

We were sent a huge bag of Swizzels retro sweets and, so I don’t just eat them all, have been using them to make some edible Halloween decorations!

To make your edible Halloween decorations, you will need:

  • A spooky silicone egg mould – we have this skull one (affiliate link)!
  • Some Swizzels hard sweets or lollies
  • Baking tray and baking paper
  • A ziplock bag and something to hit the sweets with to crush them (I used a nutcracker as it’s all I had to hand!)

Preheat the oven on high, and place the egg mould on top of greaseproof paper on the baking tray.

Place some hard sweets or lollies in a bag, and crush them. Pour the pieces into the smaller parts of the mould. Whole sweets will melt down too if they fit!

Place the tray into the oven for around 6 or 7 minutes until the sweets have melted.

Decorate the shapes with sweets if you like; we used Love Hearts and Fizzers!

After about ten minutes, when your shape is cool, carefully remove it from the mould…. and you’re done!

If you want to hang your decorations, make a hole with a skewer before the shape has cooled and hardened fully. If you try to do this when it’s hard, it will shatter.

Hang them by the window for a stained glass effects.

When Halloween is over, you can eat them!

(Bit by bit – don’t make yourself sick!).
