All you need is a sponge, a sheet of paper or cardboard, some paint, and water. You might also need paintbrushes or markers for when you’re done making the shapes and need to add some details.
Depending on the shape of the sponge, you can draw anything from a penguin to a landscape with this method.
Abstract Paintings
You don’t have to be great at blending paint if you want to make an abstract painting. In fact, drawing on a canvas can be easy if you stick to simple patterns and designs that aren’t too detailed or complicated.
Just draw a bunch of random lines – straight, curved, or even wiggly – on a canvas, make them parallel or intersecting on multiple points, and then pick a color scheme of your choice. Now paint inside the lines, and as long as the colors go well together you’ll have a true masterpiece on your hands!
Fingerprints and Handprints
Remember those little art classes back in school where the teacher would make us dip our hands or fingers into paint and then put the impressions over paper? Well, it might be time to bring those back for a fun art project with you and your kids.
As with using the sponges, you can use a brush or colored markers later for detailing. This might be more messy than using sponges, but it will result in a whole different kind of drawing than the sponge impressions would give you.
Try Drawing With References
The best way to get better at drawing is to draw with references, and to try and copy what the other person has done in their art. If you’re trying to get a start, go for drawings that don’t require a lot of shading and blending, even with a pencil.
The ideal things to draw at first would be basic line drawings, and then to move on from there once you get more confident and can copy drawings with more success. With time, you’ll notice that you’re able to draw things on your own.
Get Creative With the Brushes
If you want to have real fun, try painting with things that aren’t paint brushes. You can make vegetable stamps, use toothbrushes, wads of string, and anything else that you think might look cool. The drawings in the end don’t have to make much sense, but if you want to create a particular piece you can go online and follow a tutorial for it.
