Five ways to stay active when working from home

This is a collaborative post: Working from home can be exhausting. While it might not seem exhausting sitting at your desk all day, not moving around and staying active can cause you to feel more tired than you actually are. With so many of us still working from home since the pandemic, the importance of staying active when working from home cannot be ignored. If you’re looking for tips on staying active, this article provides 5 easy ways to stay active during remote working.

1. Schedule your exercise

Scheduling your exercise into your day is one of the easiest ways to stay active when working from home. Be sure to create a schedule that works for you and stick to it.

Rather than taking the day as it comes and seeing how you get on, you should instead look to schedule your exercise into your day as a means of keeping you motivated. If you have a clear exercise schedule to work to, this should help you to stick to it.

2. Get up every hour

Sitting down for long periods of time isn’t good for your body and you definitely wouldn’t be doing this if you were in the office. Make a deal with yourself that every hour you’ll get up and do some movement. Even if this just involves getting some more steps in during the day.

Be sure to keep your body active. If you’ve been sitting at your desk for longer than 2 hours without any movement, this is your sign to get up and get moving.

If you’ve had a busy day at work and struggled to move around much, schedule in walking sessions after work. Walking is great for your mental and physical wellbeing and can be an effective way to wind down after a busy day. If you are going to start walking, be sure to invest in some decent walking socks and shoes. You want to make sure you look after your feet well.

3. Be inventive

If you’re struggling to think of ways to exercise from home, get inventive. Set yourself challenges to do a certain amount of steps a day. Challenge yourself to use milk bottles as weights and get lifting!

There are so many ways to stay active from the comfort of your own home so get inventive and find new ways to exercise. You could even start doing yoga at home.

4. Utilise the internet

The internet is full of amazing home workout resources. If you want to fit a workout into your day, get on YouTube and see if you can find a decent workout for you. Take The Body Coach, for example. Joe Wicks’ YouTube channel is full of easy to follow videos that have been designed for a range of skill sets and requirements.

Also, you can find some pretty decent 10 minute videos online, so why not fit in a cheeky session on your lunch break. You definitely couldn’t do that in the office!

5. Set yourself clear goals

When it comes to staying active when working from home, be sure to set yourself some clear goals. Without having goals to work towards, you’ll struggle to stick to your schedule.

Goals are also a great way for you to measure your progress as you’ll be able to see exactly how far you have come.
