Three-step survival guide to lockdown for mums

This is a collaborative post

It’s safe to say that lockdown has quickly turned all of our lives upside down.

But in between the constant messages from your boss, your new-found homeschooling responsibilities, and attempts to keep the house tidy (seemingly against the best efforts of everyone else who lives there), all you can do it your best.

So to help you along, check out the ultimate 3-step survival guide to get you through lockdown.

1. Keep it simple

On top of your full-time working mum responsibilities, you might also feel the pressure to maintain a Spartan cleaning regime, prepare wholesome home-cooked dishes for every meal, and resist the urge to break out the devices whenever you need a break from the kids.

But remember, there is nothing wrong with taking a few shortcuts.

For instance, if you find you’re rushed off your feet by lunchtime, but don’t want to compromise nutrition for convenience, there are plenty of great alternatives for healthy lunches that require minimal prep. Riso Gallo specialise in rice and risotto products, and their range of quick cook meals will keep everyone satisfied.

As far as keeping the kids entertained – we all want to limit screen time, but if you need a bit of peace, there’s no shame in handing them the iPad for a couple of hours to allow you to get some work done.

As for the cleaning? Well, you’re on your own there!

2. Get into a routine

Keeping up with the 9-5 from your kitchen might be easier said than done with little ones around but helping them into a routine will help you in turn.

Encouraging them to complete schoolwork whilst you’re working is helpful for them to understand that they still have responsibilities even though their school routine has been disturbed.

Protecting family time is important too for you and them. As part of your weekly routine, why not designate Friday nights as family game nights? Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, find a new hobby you can share at weekends! Kids love creative activities like painting, while gardening is a great way to spend some time outdoors if you have the space.

3. Take time for yourself!

Remember that supermums need a break too!

With so much on your plate, it’s difficult to find the time for self-care, but it’s important for everyone that your needs are met too.

If you can find time in the mornings, or late in the evening, brief meditations are a great way to keep stress levels down – you can find a few great resources to get you started here.

Treat yourself too – when you’ve got everyone in bed, why not grab yourself a glass of wine and a bit of chocolate? After all, you’ve earned it.
