What Is THCA Distillate? A Simple Guide for Beginners

THCA Distillate, also known as diamond distillate, is the purified form of cannabis extracted from the hemp plant. This distillate contains a 90% pure form of non-psychoactive THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid) that converts into psychoactive Delta-9 THC on heating.

Why is THCA distillate called Diamond Distillate?

The 90% pure distillate or extract of THCA is called “diamond-distillate”, because it gives a crystal-like appearance when the extract crystallises naturally. These crystals exhibit a clear gemstone or diamond-like appearance, indicating the purity level of THCA.

Considering Factors to Buy THCA Distillate

Buy THCA distillate by considering and observing the following factors carefully.

  1. Purity and Potency

Purity is one of the most important factors that you must consider. Because it directly affects the potency of the extract. Higher purity extracts have a higher concentration of cannabinoids with fewer fats, waxes, and other impurities that may easily evaporate while vaping.

  1. Extraction Method

The extraction Method also impacts the quality, purity, and safety of the distillate. The supercritical CO2 extraction method is considered the cleanest and safest method, because there is no solvent residue left with this extraction method.

While extraction with ethanol is best for getting THCA extract on a very large scale. The hydrocarbon extraction method is best for extracting pure cannabis concentrates.

  1. Source of Hemp or Cannabis

The quality of raw plant material also affects the extract quality. Generally, hemp plants are cultivated in clean, regulated environments, giving organic and pesticide-free concentrations of cannabis, while poor farming gives harmful and pesticide-contaminated concentrations.

  1. Colour and Appearance of Distillate

Colour and appearance are very important factors because they indicate the presence of impurities in the extract. Often, high-grade distillate offers a clear and translucent appearance with water-white colouration. However, slight colouration may be visible depending on the extraction method used.

The presence of lipids, chlorophyll, and other impurities gives the colouration and cloudiness to the distillate. While improper filtration gives a gritty texture, that is the sign of small particle contamination in the concentrate.

  1. Consistency and Stability

Consistency and stability are the most visible factors. High-grade distillation ensures uniformity at room temperature. Layers, bubbles or crystals never appear in it if the whole process is carried out carefully.

Proper decarboxylation and purification give an even texture, along with assurance of predictable melting, vaping and dabbing behaviour. The instability of the distillate shows poor storage and poor decarboxylation.

Extraction Methods for Getting THCA from Cannabidiol Extract

THCA extract is obtained by isolating the pure tetrahydrocannabinolic acid from a pure cannabinoid extract that contains 10-25% THCA naturally. The process is carried out by following the steps of extraction, purification, refinement, and distillation.

To obtain a 90% pure THCA extract, one of the following three extraction methods can be employed, depending on the equipment, purity requirements, and local legal standards.

  1. Cold Ethanol Extraction

Ethanol (C2H5OH) is a polar solvent and can extract the cannabinoids, along with other resins such as terpenes, chlorophyll, waxes, lipids and sugars. This method is safe at the consumer level to get the THCA concentrate, because ethanol (C2H5OH) is non-flammable as compared to Hydrocarbons.

At first, an optimal surface area is prepared by crushing the hemp plant leaves, so that cold ethanol as a solvent reaches the trichomes where THCA and other cannabinoids reside. Moreover, surface area is also dried up, so that moisture cannot affect the ethanol’s ability to dissolve the concentrated cannabinoids in it.

  1. Hydrocarbon Extraction (Butane/ Propane)

The hydrocarbon extraction method is the solvent-based approach. Light hydrocarbons such as Butane (C4H10) or Propane (C3H8) are used as solvents to obtain a crude extract of 40-60% THCA, along with terpenes, from cannabis biomass.

This extraction method is the best to preserve a high proportion of native cannabinoids and aromatic terpenes from plant material. These hydrocarbons are very light and non-polar in nature, thus ensuring the dissolution of cannabinoids and terpenes, selectively.

At first, a hydrocarbon solvent mixture of butane and propane is chilled up to -40 °C to -60 °C, and then this cold solvent mixture is pushed through the cannabinoid biomass. Cannabinoids dissolve in butane, while propane extracts terpenes from the dried or fresh frozen leaves of the hemp plant.

After the crude extraction of cannabis extract, a series of purification steps is carried out using a more polar solvent. At this stage, heavy molecular lipids and waxes are solidified and separated either by filtration or absorption techniques.

At the end, decarboxylation and distillation are done to get a 99% THCA extract purity that solely consists of concentrated cannabinoid fractions. Decarboxylation is done under very low temperature conditions to avoid the conversion of THCA into THC. While distillation is done under very reduced pressure conditions to distillate THCA concentrate from the heavier impurities.

  1. Supercritical CO₂ Extraction

The supercritical CO2 extraction method is powerful enough to dissolve non-polar and semi-polar compounds in it by penetrating plant material easily. The fluid phase of carbon dioxide is used, which has both gas-like diffusivity and liquid-like solvating power.

This extraction method is very safe and economical, because CO2 is non-flammable and can naturally evaporate in the atmosphere. So, there is a low insurance burden and fewer fire-code restrictions while extracting THCA.

Conclusion

THCA distillate is very beneficial for health because of its anti-inflammatory, anti-nausea, and anti-oxidant properties, along with providing better sleep and appetite support. However, its concentration and quality highly depend on various factors and elements, so be careful while purchasing it.
