This is a collaborative post: It doesn’t matter what type of vehicle you buy or how much money you have to spend. When the family plans on spending a significant amount of time together in one car, some things should be considered before making your purchase.
First and foremost, safety should always be the number-one priority for any family with children — or adults who might find themselves taking care of children. If this describes your situation, consider these factors:
Walk around and look at each car from all angles: front and back, sides and underneath. Check out visible areas such as doors and door handles; study surfaces such as those that may come into contact with passengers; inspect wheel; check interior storage compartments.
If you can, look at safety ratings. If safety is your first concern, this shouldn’t be hard to do; there are plenty of resources available online for car shoppers who want to make sure they’re getting the safest vehicle possible.
Also, consider the overall size of the vehicle (both inside and out) and weight. A larger sized car with a higher weight will naturally be safer than smaller vehicles lighter in weight. Be aware that even heavier vehicles may not meet safety standards if other safety features aren’t included or if their condition has deteriorated over time (i.e., worn tires, brakes, etc.). Sturdy looks won’t always tell you how safe a car is.
