What Is Epoxy Used For?

What exactly is epoxy and what does it do? This commonly used glue is a variety of polymer  – a chemical composite involving huge particles that have a repetitive molecular structure. This repetitive structure is responsible for giving polymer its durability and plasticity, making it predominant in everyday life. Epoxy, in particular, plays a crucial part in construction work as it is used as a bond and in coatings. Epoxides, an extremely sensitive group of particles found in epoxy resins, will undergo a chemical reaction that bonds polymer chains, resulting in a hardened structure. While different epoxies have different curing duration requirements, fast-activating ones could take less than an hour for an effective result. 

Disadvantages of Epoxy Resins

Some epoxy resins have complex application methods. For example, activating a two-part epoxy entails the combination of two kinds of substance. More often than not, using wood glue or superglue is the preferred and more convenient choice. On top of that, epoxy vapor is highly toxic and detrimental to health. Hence it is recommended for epoxy applications to be done in well-ventilated spaces.    

Heat-Activated Epoxies

There are two kinds of epoxy glue – one that is activated by heat (one-part epoxy) and one that requires a mixture of two solutions (two-part epoxy). Although heat-activated epoxies have a shorter curing time compared to two-part epoxies, they form weaker bonds. 

While heat-activated epoxies have many industrial uses, they are less often used for construction work because of the necessary high-temperature precondition for application. Even the lowest temperature required to cure heat-activated epoxies is minimally 200 degrees Fahrenheit. 

A wide array of industrial products ranging from electronic parts and medical machinery to missile alert systems and infrared telescopes use heat-activated epoxies.

Two-part Epoxies

Often, the two ingredients necessary to trigger the chemical reaction are packed individually. When resin, also known as the “steel”, comes in contact with the hardener, a chemical reaction will take place over the next 24 hours. This reaction turns the liquid mixture into a gel-like consistency and in due course, forms a solidified structure once fully cured. Alcohol or thinners are needed to soften the material before scratching it off the surface when removing a fully cured epoxy.

Aside from industrial applications, two-part epoxies are fairly practical for boat productions and construction work. They are used to bonding various stone, concrete, and metal surfaces to one another, and fixing decorative constructs in place.  

Choosing the Right Epoxy

Strength

Always read the packaging labels to understand the epoxy’s level of resistance towards flexural, tensile, and compressive strengths. More resistance in one component usually means a compromise in another aspect. Hence it is important to contemplate your priorities when choosing an epoxy.

If your epoxy needs to be able to withstand pressure from two ends, look out for epoxy with a high compressive strength value. If flexibility of the substance after bonding is your main concern then lookout for high flexural strength value. Meanwhile, if a strong adhesive bond between two materials is your primary goal then watch out for epoxy with a high tensile strength value.

Curing Duration

Two-part epoxies have varying curing durations. Smaller projects would often require a short curing time. On the other hand, projects that need a precise application process typically take a longer time to cure. 

Viscosity

Viscosity is the measurement of the resistance to motion, The less viscous the epoxy, the smoother it flows. If it is crucial that the fluid does not run over, drip or overflow while curing, it is advisable to use an epoxy with high viscosity. 

Water Resistance 

After curing, most epoxies are water-resistant, but a few expectations are specially created to cure even when in contact with water. This is especially useful for repair works related to a leaky tank or water pipe.

Alternatives

You could consider alternative adhesives to use if they are better suited for the particular material you are working with.  

Contact Cement

Commonly used as a generic glue, this neoprene rubber binder works great for no-porous surfaces. This could be a better option than epoxy when mounting a laminate surface onto a countertop because epoxies usually need to be air-dried and this arrangement will prevent air from reaching the glue.  

Epoxy Putty

Epoxy putty works in the same way as regular epoxy does, except that they are a thick, gel-like substance. Mixing the two different putty components until a consistent color is achieved. This can be used for small-scale repair projects, but with their low tensile strength, they are not practical for industrial purposes.

Super Glue

Cyanoacrylate is a strong adhesive for general use and is sufficient for small-scale repair works. However, its strength is incomparable to that of epoxy resin, as is not suitable for industrial uses. 

Epoxy Coatings and Sealants 

Epoxies make great protective sealants with their exceptional qualities. When used to coat materials like wood or concrete, it prevents scratches and repels liquid. Furthermore, high-performing epoxy resins will give a transparent finish. 

Other Uses

Epoxy can also be used to varnish floors and create flooring which is more commonly used for commercial rather than industrial purposes. Meanwhile, epoxy paint is a type of acrylic paint that contains a small amount of epoxy, making it more lasting than regular acrylic paint.
