Dos and Don’ts During Pregnancy

The most important thing about any pregnancy is making sure you and your baby are safe. Being pregnant should be one of the most magical and exciting experiences you can have in life, but pregnancies do come with risks, and it’s vital that you are aware of the things you can and can’t do throughout. This article will share some dos and don’ts to ensure you have a safe pregnancy.

What are some of the most common complications during a pregnancy?

There are a number of reasons why a complication could arise during your pregnancy. Such complications are medical conditions that can have an impact on the health of you and your baby, and it’s important that you raise any concerns with a medical professional if you suspect something is not feeling quite right.

If at any point you feel like your doctor or other medical professionals are not providing you and your unborn child with the correct duty of care, you could be entitled to make a claim for medical negligence

Below are some of the most common complications you could experience throughout your pregnancy:

  • Hyperemesis gravidarum: Some people experience persistent vomiting during their pregnancy, which can result in severe dehydration and weight loss.
  • Preeclampsia: This condition causes issues surrounding high blood pressure, which usually impacts women in the latter stages of pregnancy.
  • Gestational diabetes: Some people can see an increase in their blood sugar levels during pregnancy, which can result in showing signs of diabetes. This can often be managed by diet, exercise or in some cases medication.

Some of the more serious complications include:

  • Ectopic pregnancy: In some cases, the fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus and you may require surgery or medication to remove the egg as it is unable to develop outside your uterus.
  • Miscarriage: This refers to the loss of a pregnancy in the first 20 weeks.

The below are just a few of the things you can do, or you can avoid, during your pregnancy to ensure the health of you and your unborn child:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet: Consume a variety of healthy foods such as fruit, vegetables and protein to give you and your baby the energy and nutrients you need.
  • Regular exercise: Keep yourself active throughout your pregnancy. It doesn’t have to be strenuous, even taking regular walks, swimming or yoga can be great options to keep you moving and as healthy as possible.

Don’ts

  • Avoid losing weight: Make sure you are eating enough food throughout your pregnancy and avoid losing any weight as this could impact the health of your baby as it may not be getting the nutrients it needs to grow.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Drinking alcohol and caffeinated drinks has been linked to pregnancy complications, so these should be avoided during your pregnancy where possible.
  • Don’t miss any medical appointments: Make sure you attend all of your medical appointments throughout your pregnancy, including scans. This will help you monitor your own health and the health of your baby.
