According to surprising new research, despite the cost of living crisis the majority of Brits are still planning trips overseas this year. And who can blame them? After years of travel restrictions due to lockdown and what’s felt like the coldest, longest winter ever, who doesn’t want a bit of sunshine? If you’re looking for holiday with kids in Spain then Tenerife should definitely be on your radar as a family friendly holiday destination.
Where to go in Tenerife for a family friendly holiday
Most of the tourist-oriented areas of Tenerife are in the south, where you also get the hottest weather in Tenerife. Playa de las Americas is probably the most famous and popular holiday destination in Tenerife, but with loud bars and clubs it is less suitable for family holidays than other resorts on the island.
Los Cristianos, close by, has lovely sandy beaches, playgrounds and the Jungle Park zoo, Siam Park and Aqualand water parks, which makes it a great base for a busy family holiday.
Costa Adeje has beautiful beaches, and there are areas which are family-oriented such as the area of Puerto Colon and you can get to the zoo and aqua parks.
Slightly less popular, and thus less crowded, areas to the north of the island can also offer a great base for family holidays.
Peurto de la Cruz is the best place to stay in the north of Tenerife.
The weather here is slightly cooler too, which can be a benefit for families visiting during the hottest months.

The world famous zoo, Loro Parque, is located there and is a must see. It has numerous interactive and immersive exhibits and children and adults alike will enjoy their trip; particularly the penguins!
Another day out – which is really reasonably priced – is to the Costa Martiánez leisure complex, or Lago Martiánez. This is a set of pools by the sea set within gardens, and it costs between €1.50 and €5.50 for entry.
All inclusive or self catering?
All inclusive holidays in Tenerife are very popular as you can budget for your holiday easily knowing that meals and drinks are included in the price. Unlike some areas in Spain such as Magaluf which introduced caps on all-inclusive drinks, there are no set limits on the number of alcoholic drinks you can have (this of course may vary from resort to resort).
If you aren’t planning to travel too far during your holiday, it can work out a much cheaper option than staying in a hotel and eating out every day.
Children can pick and choose what they want to eat and when, usually from a large buffet style offering, and often snacks are also included. The larger the resort, the more choice in restaurants and food you will have.
However, if you’re travelling with children and you want to go off the resort to discover the amenities of the island then you might prefer the flexibility and freedom that self catering villas in Tenerife can offer. You can cook within your villa meaning you won’t have large eating out costs, and can prepare and pack lunches for family days out. When to visit Tenerife for a family friendly holiday
To experience the highest temperatures you would need to visit Tenerife between June and September, although with a subtropical climate, it can also offer you some much needed sun during the winter months. This is particularly good for families who may not want to experience packed-out beaches and 29 degree heat.
During the off season, there is still plenty of sunshine with an average temperature of around 21 degrees which makes it a much better time to visit if you want to explore in comfort, and especially if you’re looking for a slightly cheaper holiday!
