1. Dungarees
Denim dungarees – so 1990, but also so right now. Made popular by the Fugees, TLC and other recording artists of the time the bigger, the baggier, the better. I’d pronbably skip the condoms pinned to them like Lisa Left-Eye Lopes, though, but it’s up to you.
2. Hip Hop Jewellery
When you think hip hop jewelry, you probably think of grills or chunky gold chains. Artists of the 90s were often dripping in gold; a Cuban chain, solid rings, earrings… If you want to explore the edgier side of the Hip Hop fashion, there’s was always Three 6 Mafia’s Lord Infamous who had a nose septum piercing too. The saying ‘less is more’ does not apply here.
3. A bucket hat
Kangol made the ultimate bucket hat, as worn by rappers like LL Cool J and Kanye West back in the 90s. They might have been out of style for a few decades but if you want to complete the rapper look then they’re definitely back in – and you can buy one for £39 on ASOS.
4. A paisley bandana
Tupac was the ultimate bandana wearer – and now they’re back back back, but interestingly more often on women than men. You can also get one for your hip hop loving dog.
5. Timberland boots
The Timberland boot in classic tan is still recognised known as a staple of New York style, but its origins can also be traced to 90s hip hop. Though intended for construction workers, the story goes that the boots became popular with New York drug dealers who wanted to keep their feet dry and comfy. Biggie, Tupac, Nas and Aaliyah all wore Timberland boots, and many still do today.
6. Bright, bold patterns
Crazy patterns and clashing bright colours became a huge thing in the hip hop scene of the late 80s and early 90s, just check out Will Smith’s style in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to see what I mean.
7. Fur coats
Big fur coats and rappers go together like…. Well, fur coats and rappers. Fur coats are really never out of fashion, albeit that these days faux fur is more common and much more acceptable than real fur.
8. Baggy trousers and crop tops
One for the ladies here; not a look that everyone can pull off but huge baggy jeans and a little top in any colour at all – as long as it shows your toned midriff and your belly button piercing, you have a hip-hop outfit.
9. Velour tracksuits
Total comfort, 90s style, and back in fashion today, especially with a cropped hoodie. Although, wouldn’t that make your belly cold?
10. Checked flannel shirts
The ‘shacket‘ is the modern equivalent of the oversized plaid flannel shirt which was Oh So popular in the 90s.
