This is a collaborative post: People love to express themselves in different ways, some more creatively than others. You probably know that all too well if your child is passionate about music.
Having a kid interested in something like this can be a little nervewracking because it throws up many questions about their future. Will they be able to find a stable job? Will their talents ever be discovered?
However, rather than worrying about what may or may not be, it’s important to just live in the moment and celebrate what your child loves. There are plenty of ways you can embrace their passion for music, and by trying them, you give your kid the freedom to do something that makes them truly happy.
- Help Them Learn An Instrument
If your child is interested in becoming a musician, it’ll probably benefit them to learn an instrument. After all, the more skills they have at their disposal, the better their chances of impressing audiences around the world. Plus, there’s a lot that this hobby can do for them mentally, socially, and creatively.
This doesn’t mean you should try to force them to learn something specific, though. Telling them that you’re going to put them in lessons without any prior discussion may have the opposite effect, especially if the instrument isn’t something they care for. There’s no point forcing your child who loves playing the drums to learn the recorder.
Ask them if there’s anything they’re interested in and see what you can do to make their passion a reality. You may not be able to afford an instrument yourself – or have the soundproofing in your home to allow it – but this isn’t always necessary for lessons anyways.
Let Them Choose The Tunes
Your taste in music may be completely different from your child’s. However, if you want to embrace their musical passion, it may be worth letting them choose the tunes from time to time. Perhaps when you’re in the car together, you give them control over what gets played. That way, they get to listen to what they love, while also sharing that experience with you.
If you’re all about classical tunes and they’re into heavy metal, this may be quite an immense sacrifice to make. However, you never know when you might encounter a song you surprisingly enjoy. Plus, doing this reinforces your support of their interests, which can pay off in the long run.
Educate Yourself
Unless you’re musically-inclined yourself, you probably don’t know a great deal about music, from how to make it to how to perform it. That’s just more of a reason to educate yourself about what you can, though, especially if your child is passionate about this form of self-expression.
Not only will this help you connect with your kid’s interests, but it could also prove useful when they’re deciding what career path to explore. Maybe they’re contemplating becoming a DJ but don’t know a great deal about what that entails. Luckily for you, then, that you already read up on what you need to become a DJ, so you have the information they’re looking for.
Or, perhaps they’re already exploring this path, and you want to prove you’re not too “uncool” to discuss it with them. Having essential information about DJ setups and how to mix music at your disposal could tip the scales in your favour.
Coach Them Through The Struggles
Even if your child loves music more than anything, there will be times when they want to give up. Maybe they’re bored of the instrument that they play or are fed up with being overlooked in performances. These can be incredibly frustrating moments for your kid, and as a parent concerned for their future, you might not be inclined to interfere. However, you shouldn’t let your worries get in the way of their passion.
If you know that this is something they love more than anything, then be sure to lend an ear when they’re struggling. You shouldn’t force them to keep going, but it’s definitely worth letting them know they have to fight for what they care about. Otherwise, they’ll always give up when things get too difficult.
It might help to try some of these tips if you find that your child struggles to stay determined, despite caring passionately about music. For all you know, it could be your behaviour that’s influencing this mindset, in which case, you’ll want to adapt it ASAP.
It’s natural to want what’s best for your child, and that comes with a lot of concerns. You probably also want them to follow their dreams, though, and it’s rare for that not to have its share of risks. The best thing to do is just support your kid’s musical passions and be there for them if things don’t go to plan.
