Tips for making a move a smooth affair

This is a collaborative post

Coordinating a move can be overwhelming, especially if you are moving a large distance or if you have never been in charge of a move before. While there always will be a little bit of an element of chaos to moving day there are several things that you can do to make it a smoother transition for you and your family. Here are some places to start if you don’t know what to do.

Storage Facility

When you are planning a move, it may be a good idea to use a self storage facility to keep some of your things that you will not be needing for a while. This can be especially useful if you are staging your house to sell before the move. People are more likely to make an offer on your house if they can picture themselves living there. They can more easily picture themselves living in your home if it is not cluttered and gives their imagination room to explore. Storing some of your items at a second location while selling your house will not only help it sell faster, but it will also make moving day easier because some of your possessions will already be packed and ready to go.

Think About Decorating

It may seem like putting the cart before the horse, but you may want to think about decorating your new home before you move. Doing simple things like picking out the style of your home decor and the colors for your wall can be much easier before you move. This gives you time to get rid of things you don’t want to keep which will make moving easier. If you know the color you want to paint the walls, you can get everything painted while the new house is empty. This will help your house feel like your home much faster and will save you the hassle of trying to paint while you are living in the home.

Organisation

When you pack your boxes, it is important that you label them. If you write the room in which they belong on each box, then movers can place them where they need to go. This will make the unpacking aspect of moving go much better. It will also alert you to where the important items are like cleaning supplies and shower curtains. You should also make sure to pack a bag of essentials like toiletries and clothing that you will need right away.

Time Management

It is also important to not leave all the packing until the last minute. If you take a little bit of time each day in the weeks leading up to the move, then it will not seem like such a big task. On top of packing up all your belongings, you also have a lot more to coordinate when you move. Scheduling in when you are going to forward your mail and change all your addresses can help make the transition smoother. You should also make sure you account for getting utilities and internet set up at your new house and any other moving items that will make your moving day easier.
