How to pick face wash?

A good face wash is probably one of the most valuable parts of a skincare routine, as clean skin is the basis for other skincare products to work well. Some of the other key products in a healthy skincare routine include moisturizers, lotions, as well as toners. One of the most important things to consider when choosing a good face wash is picking one that is suitable for your skin type, as each skin type whether it be dry to oily acne prone skin have different needs.  A good face wash does more then just clean dirt and impurities from the skin but will also help rebalance the pH. In this article we will explore not only why you need a face wash but also what are the best face washes for different types of skin.

Why Do You Need a Face Wash?

As we mentioned above, from a dermological perspective, the best face wash will go beyond removing makeup, dirt, oil and pollutants but also help with removing dead skin.  A good face wash will also fight against bacteria, hydrate skin and promote cell regeneration. Ideally, try and avoid ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a harsh surfactant), fragrence (it smells nice but it definitely irritates skin), bad alcohols such as isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol 40 and ethyl alcohol as they dry out the skin and finally parabens (which are put into skincare formulas as a preservative).  Lastly also think about avoiding formulas that contain the “bad kind” of oils such as Mineral Oil and Petroleum.

Two very affordable cleansers that work for multiple skin types are Cerave and Cetaphil.  Both are formulated to be extremely gentle on the skin but still are effective when it comes to targeting dirt, grime and oil. In fact, both Cerave and cetaphil are dermotologist reccomended and won’t strip the skin of essential moisture.  If you’re curious about the difference between cerave vs cetaphil, it really comes down to preference.

Best Face Washes By Skin Type

Read on to discover the ingredients and formulas to suit different skin types.

Oily Skin:  Oily skin is usually more prone to large pores, blackheads and shine. Try and choose a cleanser that contains ingredients like Tea Tree Oil (known for its antibacterial properties), Salicylic acid (helps to unblock pores as well as control breakouts) and Charcoal (helps fight shine and heal the skin).

Dry Skin:  Dry skin usually needs hydrating ingredients to nourish and moisturize. Look out for skin-beneficial oils from the likes or Argan and Rosehip.  Other important ingredients for dry skin include ceramides and and plant extracts such as Cucumber to soothe the skin. On packaging keep an eye out for words like “creamy” or “milky”.

Combination & Sensitive Skin: When it comes to picking a cleanser, combination and sensitive skin are considered to be the complicated to choose from.  The reason why this is so is that the cleanser needs to balance both dry and oily patches. Its important to pick a formula that gently cleanses but still provides some level of hydration. Gentle is the key word here as you don’t want your skin left feeling tight. Generally, Lotion or Gel based cleansers make sense.

End Thoughts

Finding a good face wash doesn’t have to be a very difficult task.  As was discussed It’s important to consider your skin type and its needs when choosing the right face wash.  Keep in mind the first face wash might not work out and that your skin’s needs change depending on what time of year it is.  Furthermore, remember that you may need different types of face washes at different periods of life as your skin may change. For example when you’re young your skin may be oily and you may break out but as hormonal changes happen your skin may become dry.
