This is a collaborative post: Giving birth isn’t smooth sailing for everyone. There is a lot that can go wrong from losing a child to having to overcome birth injuries. Finding the strength to recover and move on from such a birth isn’t easy. Below are just a few tips on how you can try to recover.
Allow yourself time to recover
You need time to mentally and physically recover. While looking after a newborn doesn’t allow much time for rest, you may need it if you are experiencing health problems of your own or having to recover from major birth injuries such as c-section scars. A partner or other family member will need to be prepared to step in and help you so that you have time to rest and heal.
Talk to other mothers who dealt with difficult births
Many mums who experience difficult births find it hard to relate to other mums who may have had straightforward births. It can be sometimes worth seeking out other mums who are in the same boat. You may be able to connect with these mums through forums or via support groups. This includes groups for mums that have experienced late miscarriages and groups for mums with disabled children.
Talk to professionals about what went wrong
If something went wrong during the birth, it can be useful to work out how it happened for your own peace of mind. There is no point dwelling on what could have been done differently, however it can be important to know if someone else was to blame. A midwife who was at the scene will usually be able to talk to you about what happened and answer any questions if you went through a difficult birth.
Know when to make a complaint
If negligence occurred, it could be worth filing a complaint to let the hospital know. It is important that any medical staff that didn’t do their job properly are held responsible to help avoid such mistakes happening again. In some cases, you may be able to seek out compensation for preventable birth difficulties – there may be specialist lawyers you can hire to help you with this such as cerebral palsy solicitors. This compensation could even help with your recovery.
Get counselling if you feel you need it
Certain traumatic births may require counselling to recover from. In fact, there are many people who find counselling beneficial after a difficult birth, helping them to make sense of some of the feelings they may be having and allowing them to move on. You can search for birth trauma therapists in your area online. Try out a counselling session and see if it has any benefit.
