I feel like collectibles should have their own section on this blog as my kids are obsessed by them. Cute ones, silly ones, yukky ones; there’s nothing they like more than opening up a surprise box, packet or egg to see what’s inside.
Many collectibles we’ve reviewed (which you can see here!) are cute, pink and ‘girly’ ones.
Mad Lab Minis, from the same people who brought you Fingerlings Untamed, are something else entirely!
Mad Lab Minis are fearsome little collectibles which offer a surprise unboxing element, mix-and-match collectible characters and sand, putty or slime!
Inside each 7cm plastic ‘test tube’ is a mystery Mad Lab Mini character.
There are 34 prehistoric characters to collect in the first series, of which 18 are common, nine are rare and three are ultra rare. There are also three limited edition characters, and lastly one rare golden character, Goldrush. You can see the collector’s list below.
Each character must be ‘extracted from its DNA’ compound – the messy part!
One third of the characters come with colourful BioSand (which is basically kinetic sand).
You can tell which contain BioSand because the test tube will rattle when you shake it!
The outer wrapper is quite tricky to remove; I’d recommend a pair of scissors for this. Once removed, you will see the type of compound (BioSand, GeoSlime or TerrClay) but your UNTAMED Mad Lab Mini collectibile will be hidden by the collector’s map!
Unwrap, pull of the lid and peel the plastic film away to release your new Mad Lab Mini collectible character!
Our first was Grinder, a ‘rare’ skeletal dinosaur with BioSand.
Our second came with GeoSlime. Note that it is probably not a good idea to let children open these on their own in bedrooms, because as we all know, as fun as slime is it is not great for carpets!
In the slime, we got Stealth; a common green and purple raptor who matches our UNTAMED Fingerling!
The third Mad Lab Mini that we opened was Gambit, a rare character who comes with TerraClay, which is a bit like putty.
Other characters we got included Jagger, a skeletal wolf, Overkill and Silvertooth.
Once you have a few of the Mad Lab Minis, you can conduct your own ‘science experiments’.
The heads and bodies come apart so you can swap them over to create your own hybrid creatures.
With 68 pieces to swap and change, there are over 1000 combinations!
It’s also possible to keep the compounds, if you want to, inside the test tubes. Alternatively your children may decide that they want to mix them up; if you have a strong stomach then it is a lot of fun (for them. Just don’t watch and be prepared to chuck the lot away afterwards!).
Mad Lab Minis retail at £4.99 each, which is quite a lot for a collectible if you do end up throwing the compound away afterwards, but the kids had hours of fun unwrapping and playing with their creatures and we have kept the now delightfully brown half goo-half sand mixture at my son’s request.
They will be available to buy in store and online.
