As part of my newborn essentials guide, we were sent the Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE and I thought it would make good sense to test it out and review it before handing it over to my sister to use with her new baby.

Here is what you need to know about the Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE.

  • The Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE is a group 0/1 car seat which suitable from birth (minimum40cm).
  • It comes with a sturdy newborn insert which can be removed as the child grows and it can be used right up until the child hits 18kg/105cm(around 4 years old).
  • It has a five point harness which cannot be removed.
  • Installation of the car seat is easy using the ISOFIX points and the stabilising leg/prop.
  • The car seat can be can be reclined easily, and rotated 360 degrees which makes it easy to get baby in and out of the car, and harnessed correctly.
  • The DUALFIX  i-SIZE can be used rear or forward facing, but of course I would always advocate rearfacing as long as possible.

Installation of the Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE is simple thanks to the ISOFIX points.

Here’s an official installation video. We followed this and had no problems at all!

Before you insert the seat, pull the grey ribbon cord at the bottom (below the seat) to release the ISOFIX points and pull them forward.

Adjust the rebounder bar so that it matches the slope of the car’s seat.

The chair comes with ISOFIX installation aids to help guide the metal clips of the car seat to the ISOFIX point, but you don’t have to use these if your ISOFIX points are easy to find! Guide the points in until they click and push the chair forward until you can see the green indicators.

The support leg then goes down and again you need to be able to see the green indicators.

To rotate the seat, press in the grey button on the side and twist the seat round. It will only click into place when facing forwards or backwards.

To loosen the straps, press down on the button where the strap comes out and pull on the straps. To tighten it, pull on the grey ribbon cord between the legs. PLEASE NOTE in these pictures we weren’t travelling anywhere, so the straps aren’t done up as tightly as they would be usually (because he wasn’t having it!).

Although it’s heavy, once it is installed in your car properly, the DUALFIX i-Size is stable and sturdy.

I wouldn’t say it made a great choice for someone who needed a car seat for use in multiple cars, but if you will likely install it once and leave it there until it needs to be cleaned or you need to do your twice-yearly tip run, then it is a good choice.

The Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE  is similar to the previous Britax Römer DUALFIX, but there are some differences.

We bought the Britax Römer DUALFIX around five years ago and my three year old still uses it in my parents’ car, however there are subtle differences between the old style Britax DUALFIX and the newer Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE.

Firstly, the DUALFIX did not score particularly well for small babies on Which? The DUALFIX i-SIZE car seat has a good rating and can be safely from newborn/40cm and there is a sturdy newborn insert which comes inside the chair.

The DUALFIX i-SIZE seat can be rotated on any recline setting.

Unlike the previous car seat, which felt clunkier, if you reclined it on a journey then you had to remember to place it in the upright position before you could rotate it successfully.

Additionally, to change it between rear and forward facing there were buttons you had to press which meant you couldn’t use the recline in forward facing mode. It was quite easy to get wrong, I’m afraid I can’t be much more specific I’m afraid as we never used it in forward facing mode! However the new model Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE doesn’t require adjustment when switching between rear and forward facing. It is much smoother and easier to use.

The Britax Römer DUALFIX  i-SIZE also has a longer body than the previous DUALFIX.

The headrest extends which means it can be used for longer; until your child reaches 105cm. As you can see from my very NOT newborn 3.5 year old below, there is plenty of room left in the new i-SIZE DUALFIX. For children who are of average or below average weight and height, they will get at least four years out of the seat before outgrowing it.

What did we think of the Britax Römer DUALFIX i-SIZE?

I am really impressed with the changes to the DUALFIX. Although I liked the car seat before, my daughter was due to grow out of it long before she turned four which is why we replaced it with the rearfacing to 25kg Axkid Minikids.

However with my son on a lower centile for weight, a seat like the Britax Römer DUALFIX  i-SIZE would be appropriate until he is old enough for a high backed booster like the Britax Evolva.

The chair itself offers Superior Side Impact Protection. SICT inside keeps your child away from the impact while absorbing energy at the same time in the event of a side impact.

While driving, the seat stayed in place and did not move around or rattle at all. My son was comfortable and happy to climb in and out.

The rotation on the DUALFIX i-SIZE makes life a lot easier to get children in and out.

For babies it’s a total backsaver and when they’re old enough to climb in and out by themselves, it makes it easier to get them strapped in properly.

Lastly, the recline is great compared to other seats we’ve tried and very easy to change; perfect for babies that want to sleep in the car!

The only downside the Britax Römer DUALFIX  i-SIZE is predictably that cost; at £430 (about £200 more than the DUALFIX is currently available for) it’s not a cheap car seat and if looking for a second seat for baby to use after a baby carrier, I can imagine that parents might struggle to justify the cost.

However if it is bought in preparation for a new baby and used from newborn then it could easily be worth the money with the range of features that it offers.
