UPDATE 11/12/2018: The Lelli Kelly shoes (specifically the velcro fastenings) sadly did not last a full term. The shoes themselves are fine, but the velcro straps no longer ‘stick’, rendering them useless. I would definitely not recommend these particular Lelli Kelly shoes as school shoes particularly for young children. However, I have contacted Jake Shoes for a replacement and they were only too happy to receive a return and send me out some new shoes with just the one permanent velcro strap, which I expect to last a lot longer!
My oldest is starting school in just over a week and we’re all pretty excited.
We have her uniform; the majority was bought from the PTA stall at the school summer fair (bargain!) with a few new bits thrown in for good measure, which left us with just the school shoes to get.
There is only one school shoe shop within a reasonable distance but in peak back-to-school time it gets busy to the point where you have to make an appointment, and with some kind of Hunger Games-style shoe shopping experience in mind I’d been putting it off. After all, I’ve had some scary shoe shopping experiences.
Jake Shoes asked whether we’d like to work with them on a review of some school shoes.
Jake Shoes is an independent shoe retailer in Stockport & Manchester, which was voted best shoe shop in Manchester & fashion independent retailer of the year 2017. As well as three bricks-and-mortar shops in the Arndale Centre, Stockport and Altrincham, they have an online shoe shop catering to men, women and children.
We were more than happy to help out, especially if it saved us a trip to the shops!
The ‘young girls school shoes’ section had a good selection of black, school-suitable shoes in her size.
A friend with older girls had told me that patent shoes were actually better and longer lasting than leather shoes, so I had it in mind that we’d go for patent. Apart from this preference the rest of the shoes looked to be fine in terms of following the rules set by the school.
Together we browsed through the shoes and I let her pick her favourite; after all starting school is very daunting so why not do it in shoes you just love!
She chose these ‘Mandy’ patent leather changeable strap shoes from the brand Lelli Kelly which come in some half sizes and different width fittings. They retail at £49.99.
The best thing about them is that they come with three different types of straps; plain, a black bow and a sparkly bow.
Perfect for school, but also great for parties and special occasions!
The straps are easy to change; undo the velcro on each side, thread it through the strap and fasten again.
When the shoes arrived, they were even packed with some Lelli Kelly socks and a makeup palette.
This was, of course, even more exciting than the shoes themselves.
Luckily we’d got the sizing right and the shoes fit well!
However, Jake Shoes will offer a refund or exchange if the sizing isn’t as expected. They also offer a price match promise, and free delivery if you spend over £50.
The shoes themselves are well made and should last us until she outgrows them; hopefully not too soon! The velcro fastenings mean she can get them on and off by herself and the choice of straps mean they are the only shoes she should need!
She looks so grown up in her new school uniform with her smart shiny school shoes!
They’ll make her first day at school extra special.
Thank you to Jake Shoes who let us pick a pair of shoes free of charge for the purposes of this review. You can check out the entire range on their website. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates!
