So, ladies and gents, if you didn’t know already, this is now an award winning blog.
Yep, against every expectation I won the Best Comic Writer award at the Mumsnet Blogging Awards. I must say that did make up for Friday’s disaster day somewhat.
I wasn’t sure whether to start from the beginning and do a rundown of my day at Blogfest, but to be honest loads of people will be doing that, my memory isn’t great, and the biggest thing for me about blogging conferences is meeting/catching up with other bloggers and chatting about things like DA, PRs, Moz, SEO and other stuff that people outside of the blogging world are probably blissfully unaware of and definitely don’t give a shit about.
I will instead pick out the highs and lows of my day:
|Ridiculously photogenic Hattie, That Mum Blog|
I travelled up on the train with my more than worthy rival Hattie from That Mum Blog. It was at least 1650% more fun than travelling on the train to London with the Whingelets even though it was early and we both had to mainline a coffee before we could hold any kind of coherent conversation.
Weirdly, Hattie and I live pretty close to each other; before the awards were announced we’d even met up before for a civilised drink (which turned into three bottles and a whole day of prosecco based regret). I like her a lot. It’s why my competitive edge didn’t get the better of me and I managed to steel myself from pushing her under the tube.

I also had time during Blogfest to meet up with my Chucklemums pals Mumzilla, Beta Mummy, Mouse Moo Me Too and hilarious regulars Unsung Mum, Turning Up in Devon, A life Just Ordinary, and And Another Ten Things. Some of my favourite TribalChat ladies The Pramshed, Island Living 365, and Bringing Up Georgia and the #KCACOLS crew including Franca with whom I will be sharing a room in Paris at the end of the month (I promise I will tell you more about this one soon!).
…and so, SO MANY others.
There were so many ladies I admire (sorry, Ed Balls, you will never have my admiration) speaking at Blogfest. I can’t pretend that I learned a lot about blogging, and you probably won’t see a marked increase in blog quality (soz), I’m not even sure what I was really doing in the ‘pitch to publication’ session, but I did come away feeling warm and fuzzy.
One thing I did not know about Blogfest is there’s no booze until after the awards are done and dusted; at my last blogging conference, Britmums, we had a few small glasses of prosecco (served by a semi-naked oiled man… which was interesting) with lunch, and then during the breaks, and at the awards.
My advice to future award finalists who may be hoping for a medicinal beverage to steady their nerves would be to take a hip flask. I brought my Litecup – those jolly nice people who sponsored me to attend the event, but like some kind of ridiculous amateur did not pre-fill it with booze. This meant I was entirely goddamn sober when I had to walk onto the stage with Davina McCall and Sara Pascoe in a state of shock and disbelief.
|There’s wine in here.|
This was swiftly rectified. After the awards there was copious amounts of alcohol, and alongside it much chatting to some amazing people – I will literally never ever get this blog post out if I start listing them all. My whole brain hurts right now, and I’ve had to put my gameface on and celebrate my daughter’s third birthday (coming tomorrow) with my in-laws. They were very understanding. The children were not.
Tomorrow (her actual birthday) we have intentions on going to the zoo, or something like that. So I’d better skip off to bed.
But before I do…
Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me, who told me I could do this, who cheered me on so loudly that Davina actually commented on the noise. Thanks to every single one of you who has ever read my blogs, shared them with your friends, commented, given them a ‘like’ on Facebook or retweeted them on Twitter. Thanks to everyone who’s laughed. You’re all bloody awesome. It means the world.
And now I really am going to bed.
